DAYTON — The perfect season continues for the Madison High School boys basketball team.
Clinton-Massie kept things close for much of the first half, but the top-seeded Mohawks (22-0) got on a roll late in the second quarter and never let up in defeating the Falcons 64-39 on Monday, March 1, in a Division III sectional semifinal at the University of Dayton Arena.
Clinton-Massie had a one-point lead at the end of the first period and were in a 16-16 tie with five minutes to go in the opening half, but that’s when Madison turned things up a notch. The Mohawks opened a 13-0 run that included five free throws and four field goals while the Falcons could do little but watch.
“Our whole game plan was to slow things down and limit their possessions,” C-M coach Brian Mudd said. “We wanted to make seven, eight, nine even 10 passes and get the open looks.”
That worked for the first quarter and a half, but Madison made the adjustments.
“Their long possessions kept us from doing what we wanted to do,” Madison coach Jeff Smith said. “We broke down a couple times and they got us in some back cuts, but we went to a 1-3-1 and sped up the game.”
The Falcons (6-15) couldn’t keep up after that.
“They dictated the tempo on us early,” said Madison senior Tyler Dietz, who benefited often from the up-tempo game with 17 points, most of them on fastbreak layups. “We allowed them to do that, but we really stressed the first few minutes of the second half to keep it up. We knew that would help us dictate the second half.
“I thought we stayed calm too,” he continued. “We didn’t force bad shots and let the game come to us. This win feels pretty good, but it’s just one of many steps to reach our goal.”
Justin Brunswick led the Mohawks with 18 points and Mark Maloney added 10.
Brad Burgess led the Falcons with 12. Travis Amburgey contributed 10.
“I felt like we were just a couple of defensive stops and some jumpers away from cutting their lead to single digits,” Mudd said. “If we had been able to do that, maybe they would have started to think some.
“We played well, but we had to play near perfect to beat them,” he continued. “It’s tough to come back when you get down double digits.”
Madison will face Badin at 8 p.m. on Friday at UD Arena for the sectional title.
