MIDDLETOWN — Middletown High School bowler Christian Woodlan was hoping to get his season off to a good start.
Instead, he got it off to a perfect start.
The junior rolled his first career 300 game Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 24, to help lead the Middies to a 2,913 to 2,758 victory against Mason at Eastern Lanes.
“I could feel everyone watching as soon as I hit the 10th frame,” Woodlan said. “I didn’t get nervous until my 12th ball. After that last strike, I turned around, and everyone was cheering. It was hard to believe I had done it.”
Not only was the 300 game a first for Woodlan, who only began bowling in eighth grade, it was the first in the history of the MHS program.
“He’s the kind of kid that doesn’t change his emotions a lot, so he stayed really calm,” Middies coach Nelson Hurte said. “But when he turned around after that last one, it was the biggest smile I’ve ever seen him have.”
Among the first to congratulate Woodlan were his parents, Brent and Kathi.
Christian said last year his parents promised him $100 for a 300 game, but with Tuesday marking the season opener, they hadn’t had time to discuss incentive clauses this season.
“I’m gonna try to hold them to it,” he said jokingly.
Christian, who was voted second team All-Greater Miami Conference his freshman and sophomore seasons, actually finished the day with 18 strikes in a row after stringing together six straight to close out his first game with a 247.
“I always knew I could do it,” he said of the 300. “I just didn’t think I would come out and do it in the first match.”
