KETTERING — Taft High School senior twin guards Cameron and Kevin Mitchell are considered by many to be among the top guards in Ohio.
According to their father, Senators coach Mark Mitchell, Kevin is considered to be in the top 10 among Ohio seniors while Cameron is ranked in the top 30.
Cameron led Taft with a game-high 23 points in an 84-56 win over Madison on Wednesday, March 17, in the Division III regional semifinals at Fairmont’s Trent Arena. Kevin finished with 15.
5 on 7
In an attempt to simulate Taft’s full-court pressure defense, Madison coach Jeff Smith often had his players play against seven defensive players at one time in the practices leading up to Wednesday’s game. But even that didn’t work.
Blanked and a half
Big men seniors Adolphus Washington of Taft and Justin Brunswick of Madison hounded each other for the entire game. Wherever one went, the other was there too.
As a result, both had perhaps one of their lowest scoring nights of the season.
Washington scored nine points in the first half but failed to score in the second half because of Brunswick and some foul trouble. Brunswick finished with five points, all from the foul line.
Lots of support from Mohawk faithful
Madison sold out its allotment of 750 pre-sale tickets and the Mohawk faithful was well represented.
The Madison fans filled the east side of the stands while Taft’s side of the stands were about two-thirds full.
