WAYNESVILLE — For two minutes and nine seconds, Madison’s senior guard Lindsay Hoskins just stood there with both hands on the ball.
For the game’s other 29 minutes and 51 seconds, Hoskins and her Mohawk teammates owned host Waynesville in a 53-31 Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division clinching win.
Madison (19-0, 11-0 SWBL Buckeye) charged out to an 18-6 lead after one quarter of play. They were up 23-6 when the Spartans (13-5, 9-2 Buckeye) utilized a box and one zone defense to try to keep Ally Malott, Madison’s top scorer, from scoring.
And so on the next trip down the court, Hoskins stepped across the midcourt line and just stood there as the Waynesville defenders packed their zone defense around Malott and the rest of the team.
“I’ve never done that before for that long,” Hoskins said. “It was two minutes, but it felt like it was two hours that I was out there just standing with the ball. We’re not going to compromise and let teams tell us what we’re going to do. We’re going to tell them what to do. That’s what we believe.”
Waynesville finally broke out of its zone defensive scheme midway through the second quarter, and Madison closed out the first half with a nifty Brittany Shields pass to Hoskins for two points, and then Ashley Cox’s jumper from the left baseline for another two.
Madison led 29-6 at halftime. Waynesville did not score in the second quarter.
Spartan coach Tim Gabbard was OK with the Mohawks’ stall tactic.
“They could’ve held it the whole game,” he said. “The way we were shooting, it didn’t matter,” Gabbard said. “We knew Hoskins was going to score against us, she always does. But No. 12 (Cox) really did a nice job against us too.”
Cox and Hoskins led all scorers with 12 points each. Mohawk teammates Shields and Rachel Blevins each tossed in eight points to go with Malott’s seven.
Waynesville junior guard Amber Bell scored all 11 of her team-high total in the second half.
Hoskins said the league title-clinching win was definitely a team effort.
“Our players down low were very influential for us,” Hoskins said. “Brittany (Shields) and Rachel (Blevins) are always on the boards and working hard, and Ashley (Cox) has stepped up big time in the past couple games. She’s getting better and better, and we need that as we get on into the season.”
Madison closes out the regular season Thursday at Northridge.
