Madison softball hurler picks Cleveland State

Calling her choice “the right fit,” Madison High School senior Hannah Kendrick is expected to sign a national letter of intent this afternoon, Wednesday, Nov. 11, to play college softball at Cleveland State University.

Opposing area batters and pitchers are probably celebrating in the streets.

According to Middletown Journal statistics, Kendrick has struck out 562 batters with a career earned-run average of 0.73 and an overall record of 42-8.

Kendrick has a career batting average of .439 with eight home runs, 94 RBIs. She’s ranked among the Middletown area’s top-3 in homers and runs batted in for each of the past three seasons.

Coach Angie Nicholson of the defending Horizon League champion Cleveland State Vikings had first offered a scholarship to Kendrick last January. After making her official visit to the Cleveland-area school last month, Kendrick accepted the offer three weeks ago.

“They have a great softball program,” Kendrick said, ”but I also know that they have a great Education program. I’d like to earn a degree to be an elementary school teacher some day, and their programs just seemed like the right fit to me.”

Kendrick said she’d considered Norfolk State, Bowie State, Youngstown State, Wright State, Bowling Green and Austin Peay University before making her decision.

“I want to thank my mom and dad (Tina and Perry Kendrick), my grandma (Laura Kendrick), coach Kerri Hensley and my Madison teammates for their support through the years,” she added. “That’s been very important to me.”

Kendrick joins friend and Miami Valley Express Gold softball teammate Macall Shepherd on the Vikings roster. Shepherd, currently a freshman at CSU, is from Mason. The two plan to be roommates next season.

Kendrick and basketball standout Lindsay Hoskins (Lehigh University) are scheduled to sign their letters of intent today at Madison High School.
