MADISON TWP. — Madison High School junior Matt Houser is collecting awards like he does rebounds and 3-pointers — in bunches.
The 6-foot-4 swingman recently was named Division III Underclassman of the Year by the District 15 Coaches Association. Houser was the top vote-getter at the association’s recent all-star selection meeting.
Additionally, he was tabbed by the Ohio Basketball Coaches Association to participate in the Top 100 showcase for rising underclassmen on April 17 at Capital University in Columbus.
Houser also was a first-team, All-Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division selection and a second-team, All-Southwest District honoree.
Teammate and fellow junior Josh Foster also was named to the District 15 team and is an alternative for the Top 100 Showcase.
“(Awards) are a big deal to me personally, but overall it doesn’t mean much,” Houser said. “ ... Without the other four guys on the court, I wouldn’t be getting any of these honors or awards.”
Houser and the Mohawks (23-0) face Shroder on Thursday, March 11, in the district finals at 9 p.m. at the University of Dayton Arena.
Houser possesses a strong inside-outside game. He averages 13.7 points per game, shooting 40 percent from 3-point range, while pulling down 7.0 rebounds per game.
Houser snared 10 boards in the Mohawks’ 52-47 win over Badin in last week’s sectional championship game.
Houser said the strength of his game is his outside shooting touch, but that’s not what gives him the most satisfaction on the court.
“Rebounding,” he said, “because that’s what I take the most pride in.”
