CINCINNATI — Badin High School’s girls basketball team got treated like a No. 1 seed Sunday at Wyoming, even though it wasn’t.

The Rams were voted second behind Madison in the Division III Monroe sectional draw, but the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 seeds all avoided Badin’s bracket.

“Madison and us were both deserving of the No. 1 seed, and the votes fell the way they did,” said Rams coach Tom Sunderman, whose squad is 14-4. “We’ll take the schedule we got.”

The Mohawks (18-1) are in the upper bracket with No. 3 Carlisle (17-2), No. 4 Cincinnati Christian (11-6) and No. 5 Dayton Christian (12-5).

“I’m tickled to death to get the No. 1 seed. That’s real rewarding for our program,” Madison coach John Rossi said. “But it is a double-edged sword because all those teams jumped in with us.”

It wasn’t necessarily a slap at the Mohawks. This sectional gets a late start on Saturday, Feb. 18. Teams want to play on the 18th to shorten the gap between the regular season and the tournament, and there are only three games that day, two in the upper bracket.

Madison and Badin chose to play on the first day, and Carlisle coach Randy Glover took the other Saturday game. CCS coach Paul Owens then jumped on Carlisle, a team that defeated his Cougars 42-40 on Jan. 28.

“Everybody’s got to make their own decisions,” Glover said. “Obviously Madison and Badin want to start playing as quick as they can. We had the same discussion. And when you put yourself on the board third, somebody’s going to come after you. I can understand why Cincinnati Christian wants to play us.”

Owens went exactly where he wanted to go on the bracket.

“I just wanted to give our girls a chance — a chance — to play two games before we get into a David-and-Goliath game against Madison or Badin,” Owens said. “It’s not a lack of respect for Carlisle.”

The upper-bracket games are Madison vs. No. 11 Deer Park (4-15) at 2 p.m. and Carlisle vs. CCS at 3:30 p.m. on the 18th. The winners will get No. 9 Reading (9-8) and Dayton Christian, respectively, on the 21st.

In the lower bracket, Badin meets No. 10 Preble Shawnee (1-17) at 5 p.m. on the 18th. The winner faces No. 7 Purcell Marian (8-10) and No. 6 Fenwick (5-13) plays No. 8 North College Hill (8-10) on the 22nd.

“Getting the No. 6 seed was extremely respectful,” Fenwick coach Donn Burrows said. “I think it’s a testament to our strength of schedule.”
