MIDDLETOWN — Brooks Curry is already working hard to get ready for next year’s high school golf season.

The Middletown Christian School sophomore placed fifth in the Division III state tournament after a sixth-place finish as a freshman. The fifth-place finish also earned him a spot on the All-Ohio first team.

Despite that success, Curry knows he has to work hard through the winter months if he wants to reach that ultimate goal of winning a state championship.

“I’ll spend a lot of time at the range hitting balls,” said Curry, who is The Journal’s golfer of the year. “But it’s not about just hitting a lot of balls. I’ll be working on some part of my game, and on nice days, I’ll go practice chipping and putting somewhere.”

Curry had a two-day total of 161 at the state tournament. He initially was disappointed with his finish, but now realizes what kind of season he had.

“It was a good season,” Curry said. “I played well and had a lot of fun.

“I didn’t play as well as I wanted to at state,” he continued. “But I’m still happy with it. Fifth place is better than nothing, but I am definitely motivated for next year.”

Curry said he felt his season peaked at the district tournament when he shot 74 to qualify for his second straight state tournament.

“I felt after district that I had it going pretty good,” said Curry, who was the district runner-up at Weatherwax Golf Course. “I knew I needed to play well and that was good to have a round like that. It was my best round of the year.

“It’s more mental than anything though,” he continued. “I think golf is the hardest game there is. It is the most time consuming if you want to be good at it, but if you keep your emotions intact and have the desire to practice and desire to win, you can have success.”
