After weeks of predictions, projections and number crunching, the field is finally set.
The Ohio School Athletic Association announced on Sunday, Nov. 1, the 32 teams in each of the six divisions who will vie for state football championships.
In the Middletown area, those teams are Middletown (Division I, Region 4), Monroe (Division III, Region 12), Valley View (Division IV, Region 16) and Carlisle (Division IV, Region 16).
• The Middies (9-1) are in the playoffs for the first time since 1990. The seventh seed, they’ll travel to No. 2 Moeller (9-1) on Saturday. The Middies are making their fourth playoff appearance.
The Crusaders, who won seven state championships in the 1970s and ’80s, are in the postseason for the 28th time, including the last eight years.
• The Hornets (8-2) are back in the playoffs after a one-year hiatus. They’ll travel to No. 3 Chaminade Julienne on Friday night. It’s the eighth playoff appearance for No. 6 Monroe, which advanced to the state semifinals in 2005 and 2007.
The Eagles are in the playoffs for the 11th time, their first appearance since 2005. CJ won a state title in 2002.
• The Spartans (7-3) are in the postseason for the 16th time. The fifth seed, they’ll travel to No. 4 Kenton (9-1) on Saturday night. Valley View won state championships in 1994, 1996 and 1997.
Kenton, a two-time state champ, is in the playoffs for the seventh time and will make its first appearance since 2005. Sophomore quarterback Maty Mauk, the younger brother of former UC quarterback Ben Mauk, has passed for more than 3,000 yards this season for the Wildcats.
• The Indians (8-2) are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2004. Carlisle, the No. 6 seed, will travel to No. 3 North College Hill (10-0) on Saturday. The Indians are 0-3 in their three previous postseason appearances.
The Trojans are in the postseason for the fourth time overall, and the third time in the last four seasons.
Pre-sale tickets will be sold at the participating schools for $7. Cost will be $9 at the gate.
