COLUMBUS — It’s been a long but magical journey for the Madison High School girls basketball team as it has chased a state championship and maintained perfection this season.
That journey will reach its ultimate destination — the state championship game: The Mohawks defeated Ironton 50-43 in the Division III state semifinals on Thursday afternoon, March 18, at Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
Madison (27-0) took off from the opening tip and never trailed, although the Tigers (17-8) put together a second-quarter rally reminiscent of Madison’s regional final win Saturday over Versailles.
“Ironton did what we thought they’d do,” Madison coach John Rossi Jr. said. “They were extremely physical, but we were able to get some separation in the third quarter and never lost the lead.
“We’re excited to be playing in the state finals,” he added.
Ally Malott led Madison with 18 points, 10 of those coming at the free-throw line. Lindsay Hoskins contributed 12.
“We set goals to be here and we are,” Malott said. “It’s a great feeling.”
Madison will play Findlay Liberty-Benton (26-0) at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday for the D-III state championship.
