MADISON TWP. — Waynesville High School’s boys basketball team did everything in its power to ruin Madison’s bid for a perfect regular season, but it was just meant to be for the Mohawks.
Despite an uninspiring first-half performance, Madison ground out a 66-50 Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division victory Thursday night, Feb. 25, to wrap up regular-season play with a perfect 20-0 mark.
Added to their Division III first-round playoff win earlier this week, the Mohawks are 21-0 on the season.
“It’s never pretty,” said Madison coach Jeff Smith, whose squad also closed out division play with a 12-0 record. “We felt we’d have trouble motivating them tonight since the playoffs had already begun. We’re happy to have this one.”
Senior center Justin Brunswick took matters into his own hands in the third quarter when he scored 13 of his game- and career-high 26 points.
“We have one of the most balanced teams in the area and maybe the state,” said Brunswick, who just missed out on a triple double as he snared 13 rebounds and had nine blocks. “It just depends on who has the mismatch. Sometimes it’s Matt (Houser) or Mark (Maloney) or Tyler (Dietz) that lead us in scoring. Tonight, the team just fed me the ball.”
Junior Josh Foster also did a number defensively on the Spartans leading scorer.
Jay Allen was pouring in shot after shot in the first half for Waynesville (8-12, 4-8 SWBL Buckeye). He had 18 first-half points, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range. But as hot as he was in the beginning, he went that cold with Foster guarding him in the box-and-1.
“He kept us in it for about three quarters,” Waynesville coach Cory Crozier said of Allen, who finished with a team-high 23 points. “But they didn’t allow him as many easy looks in the second half.
“We really wanted to beat them tonight,” he continued. “We gave them our best shot, but they have so many weapons, and that’s why they are 21-0.”
In addition to Brunswick’s near triple double, Houser and Dietz each had double-doubles. Houser had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Dietz had 12 points and 11 boards. Foster also reached double digits in scoring with 10 points.
“It feels great to get this win,” Brunswick said of being undefeated in the regular season. “It’s been a dream to do this, but our goal is still not 100 percent accomplished.”
Top-seeded Madison returns to tournament action at 7 p.m. Monday when it takes on Clinton-Massie in a sectional semifinal at the University of Dayton Arena.
