MONROE — What Franklin game?

In Monroe head coach Brett Stubb’s view, last week’s 40-0 drubbing at the hands of Franklin never happened.

It’s time to move on.

“We have to put that game behind us. In that game, we played poorly against a very good Franklin team. We had five turnovers last week. When you do that, it doesn’t matter who you play, you’re not going to do very well,” Stubbs said.

And so the memory has been erased and the film’s possibly in an ashen heap somewhere.

Now, the Hornets have their sights set on the Valley View Spartans for what could be yet another classic battle between the two Southwestern Buckeye League Southwestern Division rivals.

Oh, and it’s homecoming weekend, too.

“Hopefully the players will realize the importance of this game,” Stubbs said. “With a powder puff game on Wednesday, and the parade on Thursday, game on Friday and the homecoming dance on Saturday night, it’s all more of a distraction to the players than anything else. We have a lot of things we need to get fixed this week, and hopefully the players will stay focused on what’s important.

“We know what Valley View can do, but we’ve got a lot of things to fix on our team first.”

Longtime Valley View coach Jay Niswonger is taking the same approach with his 2-2 squad.

“Right now, the team I’m most concerned about is my team,” Niswonger said. “We need to eliminate the mistakes we’ve been having. We had four turnovers last week. But what really concerns me is that we had 35 fewer snaps than our opponent (in last week’s 27-22 win over Oakwood). We need to fix things on our team right away.”

Understandably, Stubbs knows to never take Valley View lightly.

“They have good athletes, especially at running back. I know they struggled a little bit with Fenwick (a 28-0 loss in week 3), but Jay always brings a good, well-prepared team to any game,” Stubbs said.

Stubbs said Friday’s game is a “Gold Out.” Hornet fans are encouraged to wear Monroe’s yellow-gold colors in support of the team.
