SPRINGBORO — The Monroe High School volleyball team’s record-breaking season came to abrupt end Saturday afternoon.
Overmatched against No. 1 seed Alter, the fifth-seeded Hornets dropped a 25-8, 25-14, 25-13 decision in the Division II sectional finals at Springboro.
“Alter’s a good team obviously, and they definitely deserve credit for the way they played,” Monroe coach Stephanie Stenger said. “But with the performance we displayed, I don’t think they got a good taste of what this team is made of.
“We’re just really disappointed, from the coaching staff down to the players.”
The Knights (13-8) jumped out to big early leads in all three games, and Monroe was never able to get anything going, which was something the team wasn’t used to during a 21-4 season in which the Hornets obliterated the previous school record of 14 wins.
“This was a big step for us,” Stenger said. “Last year we were knocked out in the first round, so this was a pretty big deal to reach this point. But we still have a lot of work to do.
“The competition we faced this year has not been nearly as challenging as I would have liked it,” she continued. “We’ve made some schedule changes for next year that hopefully will help us improve a little bit more.”
Junior Sam Streibick led Monroe with seven kills and two blocks, and junior Kayla Mulvihill had 15 assists. Reegan Reece, the lone senior on the team, played the final volleyball match of her prep career.
“She’s a good basketball player, and I know she has a couple of offers so hopefully she has a lot of playing left to do,” Stenger said. “We had a lot of new people step up this year, which is really good to see. And we have a strong eighth-grade class coming up, so we definitely feel like we’re moving in the right direction.”
