CINCINNATI — Middletown High School seniors Andrew Globke and Desmond Hall made individual and team history Saturday night at the Greater Miami Conference wrestling championships at Oak Hills.
Globke defeated Colerain’s Detuan Smith 3-2 in the 160-pound finals to capture his first GMC title, and a few minutes later Hall held off Mason’s Thomas Danis 5-2 for the 171-pound championship, also the first of his career.
“I placed fourth last year and second my sophomore year, and I really wanted to win one,” Globke said.
Added Hall, “This was definitely a big goal of mine. This was my last year to prove myself.”
In addition to securing their first individual titles, Globke and Hall became the first Middies to win GMC championships in the same year. They also helped the team score 110.5 points to finish in fifth place, equaling the best GMC showing in program history.
“We didn’t have a full team today, but the guys who came out wrestled really well,” said Middies coach Shawn Thomas, who was voted the GMC co-Coach of the Year along with Mason’s Craig Murnan.
Middies junior LaTrell Davis, making his first appearance since suffering a hand injury on Dec. 18, finished second at 138 after a tough 1-0 loss to Fairfield’s Adam Sams.
Junior Jacob Globke (152) also placed second, falling 13-5 to Mason’s Eoin Walden, a two–time GMC champ.
Freshman Anthony Jagel took third at 106, and junior Nick Reeves placed third at 195.
Mason won the team title for the third year in a row, outscoring Fairfield 195.5 to 167.5.
The Lakota East squad was third (129).
