MIDDLETOWN — Mary Turvy’s high school soccer career is over, but the sport she loves most may still be part of her future.
The Fenwick High School senior goalkeeper has been a standout three-year starter for the Falcons. In 62 matches during those three seasons, she recorded 32 shutouts and allowed only 58 goals.
Those numbers included 10 shutouts this season as the Falcons returned to the Division II regional final before having a bid to defend their 2008 state championship stopped.
“It was a great senior season,” said Turvy, who is The Journal’s girls soccer player of the year. “We had goals set a lot higher in wanting to get back to state and repeat. I’m sad that it is over.”
Turvy, who began playing goalkeeper at age 8, quietly went about her business as the Falcons’ last line of defense, and she received plenty of recognition this year for her effort. She was named to the All-Ohio first team in Division II, the D-II Miami Valley District first team and the Girls Greater Cincinnati League Grey North Division first team.
“I just wanted to be the best captain I could be and play the best I could for the team,” Turvy said about the personal goals she set for the season. “In the end, we didn’t reach our main goal, but we all gave all our effort and that’s all you can ask for.”
Being in the net had its tense moments, she said.
“It was stressful, especially when the other team was close to scoring,” Turvy said. “That didn’t happen too often because of the great defense I had in front of me, but when it did, I just tried to get myself into a good position and be ready, because I knew a shot was coming.”
Turvy remains undecided about her plans for college.
“I don’t know where I want to go yet, but I know I want to continue playing soccer,” Turvy said. “(High school) has been a great experience for me. I’ve definitely gotten more out of it than just being able to play soccer. Winning a state championship was great. It’s still a great feeling.”
