MIDDLETOWN — The break from Greater Catholic League play provided some much-needed relief for Fenwick High School’s boys basketball team.
The Falcons, losers of four straight GCL contests, stepped out of the league Tuesday night and coasted to a 55-36 victory over visiting Edgewood.
“I think the losing streak gave us a little more intensity coming out,” said Fenwick sophomore forward John Luke Arrington, who had eight points and five rebounds. “The feeling of losing is a horrible feeling. We didn’t want to feel like that again.”
Frank Catrine sparked a game-opening 16-2 surge and scored 17 points for the Falcons, who improved to 3-4.
“Edgewood came out with pretty good intensity. They always do,” Arrington said. “But we matched it pretty well.”
Fenwick coach Pat Kreke admitted he was a bit worried about how his squad would come out after squandering a big lead and losing in the final seconds against St. Xavier last week.
“The GCL is such a tough league every night, sometimes these nonleague games are a letdown,” Kreke said. “So it was nice for the kids to set the precedent early tonight. We came out strong and set the pace of the game.
“Our young kids are getting better and better each game,” he continued. “They’re learning tough lessons. We’re still making a lot of mistakes, but we are learning. We need to do a better job with all the little things.”
Jeff Klaas totaled 10 points and seven rebounds for the Falcons. Chance Conley’s 18 points paced the Cougars (0-4).
Edgewood rallied from that 16-2 deficit and cut the gap to 18-13, but could get no closer.
“In ways, it’s encouraging,” first-year Cougars coach Aaron Horne said. “It wasn’t too long ago when that type of game would’ve turned ugly and become a 30- or 40-point loss. I’m proud of the way my guys competed. We knew we’d probably have a slow start to the season, but we feel like we’re making strides and moving in the right direction.”
Conley tallied 12 points in the second half for Edgewood. The problem for the visitors was that everybody else combined for six points during that stretch.
The game’s biggest margin was 20 (50-30 and 52-32).
“I give Edgewood a lot of credit,” Kreke said. “They kept coming after us. They wouldn’t let us just run away with it.”
Neither team was impressive at the foul line. The Cougars were 4-of-8. Fenwick was 5-of-12.
Edgewood travels to Badin on Thursday. The Falcons are idle until a Jan. 6 home game against Kettering Alter.
