SPRINGFIELD — Madison High School sophomore Ashley Cox gave the Mohawks girls basketball team a big early lift in a 62-53 Division III regional championship game victory over Versailles on Saturday, March 13.
The 6-foot center scored the first points of the game on a stickback, blocked a shot, forced a Versailles turnover and blocked two more shots before coach John Rossi gave her a breather with 1:19 left in the opening quarter.
“We all wanted this so much. We’ve been working hard for it all season. I was just doing what I could for the team,” Cox said.
Cox finished with six points. In a very physical game, Cox was the first of five players (three Mohawks, two Tigers) to foul out of the game. Cox stepped off the court with 4:29 left to play in the fourth quarter.
“I just gave it my all,” she said. “We all did.”
Blevins will be back
Rachel Blevins did not play in Saturday’s game because she is still recovering from an eye injury suffered while playing pingpong. Blevins said she’ll be ready to play in Thursday’s state semifinal game against Ironton. She’s getting fitted for protective goggles on Monday.
Not done yet
Several Madison fans were seen sporting new T-shirts. One of them had an outline of the state of Ohio with a block-M showing the location of Madison High School. An arrow pointed from Madison Twp. to Columbus, the site of the state championship, and had the words “We’re not done yet,” just above the map.
Mohawk support
It’s a wonder there was anybody actually in Madison Twp. during Saturday afternoon’s game. Mohawk fans filled the home bleachers as well as the two end sections of the Versailles bleachers.
Lights out
Play had to be stopped with 2:13 left to play in the first quarter. That’s when the lights on both scoreboards at either end of Springfield High’s gymnasium momentarily went out.
Happy anniversary
It was a year ago today when the Versailles Tigers handed Madison a 43-31 loss in the 2009 regional championship game.
That’s also the last time the Mohawks lost a game.
Coach Rossi played that game film for this year’s team on Saturday morning as motivation.
