TRENTON — Edgewood High School girls basketball coach Greg Brown characterizes his team as young. And he’ll be quick to tell you that it’s a “good kind of young.”
Mixing senior leadership in with youthful talent, the Cougars will look to put last year’s 8-13 record to shame this 2011-2012 season.
“I’ll keep telling everyone that we’ve got a young group of girls, and that’s OK,” Brown said. “But I know what these girls can do. They’re really smart. They’ve got a lot of basketball smarts in them.”
Edgewood, which finished in the middle of the Fort Ancient Valley Conference West Division a season ago, returns its top three scorers. They are junior Maura Hackney (11 points per game) and seniors Amanda Hobbs (8.9 ppg) and Kelsey Swartz (8.8 ppg).
“She’ll be our person inside again. It’s good to have her back. She’s a hard worker,” Brown said of Hackney, who averaged 10 rebounds and 2.9 blocked shots a contest last season.
Brown said it won’t be too long before Swartz will get in the groove. She’s coming off an illness that has limited her practice time.
Brown said that Hobbs “works hard, can shoot from the outside and penetrate.”
The youthful part of the Cougars’ lineup is at the guard positions. Freshmen Jenna Brown and Brittany Marts will do most of the ball-handling.
“They’re in the same kind of mold,” Greg Brown said of the duo. “Both of them played together on AAU teams. Brittany’s got a real nice outside game, and Jenna gets the ball to the basket.”
Senior Kasey McCall will see an increased amount of playing time this season, Greg Brown said.
“We’re going to be really deep as far as our bench is concerned,” the coach said. “We’re going to get a lot of kids playing.”
Brown said junior Kathryn Vogel, sophomores Corey Stevens and Jessica Murphy and freshman Haley Rutherford will battle for playing time and add to the team‘s quickness.
“We’re going to try and get the ball up the floor as fast as we can,” Greg Brown said. “We’re able to go two different ways with our personnel. We can go run-and-gun, and we can go inside as well.
“Our main goal is to win more than we lose, and we want to go after that league title and some tournament wins.”
Edgewood opens the season on Nov. 29 at Monroe.
