SPRINGFIELD — The Madison High School girls basketball team is headed to the final four.
It took double overtime to do it, but the Mohawks earned a 62-53 win over Versailles in the Division III regional finals on Saturday, March 13, at Springfield High School.
It is the first regional title in the program’s history.
“This feels amazing,” said sophomore Brittany Shields, who took a pass from senior Lindsay Hoskins and went in for a layup to start the second overtime period. It was just what the Mohawks (26-0) needed.
“It got us pumped up,” said Shields, who finished the game with seven points. “We felt like we were going to pull this out.”
Hoskins led the Mohawks with a game-high 20 points. Ally Malott had 19.
Versailles (18-7) was the last team to beat Madison. It came in the regional finals almost one year ago to the day.
“I’m still trying to figure out how we won that,” Madison coach John Rossi Jr. said. “We had that refuse-to-lose attitude and the kids persevered. I’m so proud of them.”
Madison will face Ironton, a 43-31 winner of Oak Hill, at 1 p.m. Thursday in the state semifinals at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
