CARLISLE — When Carlisle High School football coach Bill Jewell decided to replace injured star running back Nick McGill with 135-pound Jordan Jacobs, the staff was worried that he’d be easy to take down.
“We were wrong,” Jewell admitted after Jacobs scampered for 183 yards and scored four times, including two punt returns, to key a 34-0 homecoming win over Madison on Friday night, Oct. 9, at Laughlin Field.
On a wet night, Jacobs was the slipperiest thing on the field, starting with a 47-yard punt return in the first quarter. It appeared he was going to let the Madison defender down the ball, but at the last minute he picked it up and escaped down the sideline to the end zone untouched.
“I saw that the guy wasn’t going for the ball and I decided that I had to attack,” Jacobs said.
Jacobs typically plays in the slot position, but moved over to running back after McGill was injured in last week’s game against Monroe game.
“The kid’s got guts,” Jewell said of Jacobs. “He’s confident in his skills, and he should be.”
Jacobs had rushing touchdowns of 25 and 17 yards before taking another punt back in the third quarter to finish the Carlisle scoring. On that return, he had plenty of help.
“Adam Emerick made an amazing block and Dusty Laughlin had a block to get me in,” Jacobs said.
Emerick was also responsible for Carlisle’s other touchdown on a 5-yard run.
Carlisle’s defense was the difference early, holding Madison scoreless in the red zone and getting a safety from the trio of Kelly LaForce, Jake Langdon and Emerick.
Madison never really threatened again, punting on its first four possessions of the second half and finishing with 73 yards of total offense. Mark Maloney ran 16 times for 15 yards.
The win improves Carlisle to 6-1, 2-1 in the Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division, while the Mohawks fall to 2-5, 0-3 SWBL Buckeye Division.
It marks the first time since 1987-88 that Carlisle has had back-to-back nonlosing seasons, according to Jewell, and next week they hope to defeat Valley View for the first time since 1988.
Carlisle entered the game ranked fifth in the Division IV, Region 16 playoff rankings having reached six wins for the first time since their last playoff appearance six years ago, Jewell said.
