CARLISLE — The Carlisle High School boys basketball team used a big third quarter Friday night to pull away for a 64-55 Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division win over visiting Madison.

Michael Kruse scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Indians, who improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the SWBL Buckeye.

Kruse kick-started Carlisle’s 21-8 third-quarter surge with a 3-pointer in the opening seconds. Andrew Goodpastor added another trey 20 seconds later to push the Indians’ three-point halftime lead to nine. By the end of the quarter, the lead was 48-32.

“We played with a lot of energy and effort and strong defense,” Carlisle coach Jeff Waugh said. “(Madison’s) Brad Green made some shots (in the second quarter). I feel like we were guarding him. I feel we played good defense. We came out in the second half and guarded him.”

Green scored 20 points to lead an undermanned Mohawks squad. Madison (6-4, 2-2 SWBL Buckeye) was missing its top two scorers — Kyle Shouse and Joey Adleta — due to injury Friday night. Madison coach Jeff Smith hopes to get Adleta back next week, Madison coach Jeff Smith said.

“Green tried to put us on his back,” Smith said. “To their credit, (Carlisle) did a better job in the second half.”

Kruse scored 13 of his points in the second half. Goodpastor finished with 12 points for the Indians, who won their fourth straight game.

“The beginning of the season was very, very challenging,” Waugh said. “It made us better. ... Madison is good. I’m glad to get this win.”

Jeff Clemons added 16 points for Madison.

“I’m proud of the kids,” Smith said. “I told them we had our two leading scorers in street clothes on the bench. We missed the loss of their scoring and rebounding. In the third quarter, we were really, really bad. They hit (shots) and we did not handle it well.”

Both teams return to action against Preble Shawnee. The Mohawks host the Arrows on Tuesday night, while Carlisle travels to Shawnee next Friday.
