GERMANTOWN — An 18-yard field goal with 2:39 left in the game was the knockout punch for Franklin on Friday night in a 17-14 road Southwestern Buckeye League road win at Valley View.
The two teams traded scores and big plays all night with the winning field goal giving Franklin its first lead of the game.
“It was a total team effort,” Franklin coach Rodney Roberts said. “I’m proud of the kids. They fought to the end. We struggled offensively but kept fighting when our backs were against the wall. The offense was able to get it done in the second half. I was glad when we were only down by seven points at halftime.”
Valley View took the opening kickoff in the game and went 80 yards for a score on a 2-yard run by Tyler Schenck, taking 6:16 off the clock.
Schenck also scored in the second quarter on a 27-yard run.
In between, however, the Wildcats got a 77-yard run for a touchdown from Chris Hymer on a fourth-and-inches play with 1:13 to go in the first quarter.
Valley View dominated in the first half but led by only a touchdown despite 277 total offensive yards on 39 plays while Franklin had 22 plays for 148 total yards. Valley View had a 13-3 edge in first downs for the first half.
Things were different in the second half.
Franklin tied the score at 14-14 with 2:26 to go in the third quarter when Daniel Johnson scored on a 1-yard run, capping an 80-yard drive that took 5:16 off the clock.
Franklin took over the ball on their own 7 after a Valley View fake field-goal attempt came up short on fourth down. The Wildcats used a combination of runs and passes to move down the field, taking the clock from 8:26 to 2:39, when Erik Vanlandingham drilled his winning field goal.
Valley View had two missed field goals in the game.
“Two scores taken away kills momentum,” Valley View coach Jay Niswonger said. “The kids played hard. I’m sure we led in time of possession and we had close to 300 yards of offense.”
The Spartans had 377 yards on 62 plays for the game, including 60 rushes for 353. Schenck had 35 carries for Valley View for 205 yards, a 5.8 yards per carry average.
Franklin was led by Hymer, who had 13 carries for 150 yards, and quarterback Kevin Strewart, who completed 12 of 23 passes for 182 yards.
Franklin improved to 6-1 overall, 2-1 SWBL Southwestern. Valley View is 2-5, 1-3.
