CANTON — Former Middletown High School and Ohio State University football standout Cris Carter is one of 15 modern-era finalists with a chance to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A 1984 Middletown graduate, Carter was a wide receiver in the National Football League for 16 seasons, playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins. The eight-time Pro Bowl selection was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s and received the NFL Man of the Year Award in 1999.

Carter ranks third on the all-time list in total receptions (1,101) and fourth in receiving touchdowns (130).

This is Carter’s fifth year of eligibility and his fifth year as a hall-of-fame finalist.

Joining Carter as finalists are 14 other modern-era nominees and two senior nominees. Running backs Jerome Bettis and Curtis Martin, wide receivers Tim Brown and Andre Reed, offensive linemen Dermontti Dawson, Willie Roaf, Will Shields and Dick Stanfel, cornerback/safeties Jack Butler and Aeneas Williams, defensive linemen/linebackers Chris Doleman, Kevin Greene, Charles Haley and Cortez Kennedy join former coach Bill Parcells and former owner Edward DeBartolo, Jr. on the list of finalists.

Parcells and Shields are first-time eligible nominees.

Stanfel and Butler were selected as finalists by the Hall of Fame’s Seniors Committee last August.

According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, no more than five modern-era nominees can be elected in a given year, and a class of six or seven can only happen if one or both of the senior nominees are elected.

The Class of 2012, which will be the 50th to be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, will be announced Feb. 4 in Indianapolis, the day before Super Bowl XLVI.

The enshrinement ceremony is set for Aug. 7 at Fawcett Stadium in Canton.
