Summary Box: Free music sites learn from mistakes

Hot Topics

The Associated Press 2:51 PM Thursday, February 18, 2010

FREE MUSIC: Two new companies are trying to give consumers free song downloads supported by advertisers: FreeAllMusic.com and Guvera.com. Users have to register and hope to clear a waiting list to be invited.

LESSONS LEARNED: The sites are trying to avoid the troubles that doomed a similar service, SpiralFrog. Songs are free of copyright protections, so users don't have to sign back in to watch more ads. Also, the songs can be transferred to iPods.

WHY NOW: Advertisers appear willing to pay around $2 per song, meaning recording companies and artists earn about the same compensation as they get from a song sold on Apple's iTunes music store.
