Hearing that the mass in her left breast was cancer knocked India Huger over as she headed into Bible study at Maranatha Christian Fellowship in January 2010.

But the Vandalia resident with a flare for style said her faith and ability to research picked her up.

“The Lord told me I was going to live and that relieved my spirit,” she said.

Huger said cancer didn’t change her style much.

She still likes classic pieces with a little something extra, a free-spirit edge.

But since the diagnosis, the senior configuration/data manager at Wright Patterson Air Force Base has added pink ribbons to a collection of accessories that include a leopard print ring.

Huger has been a longtime donor to the American Cancer Society. The University of Dayton graduate upped her personal ante this year because she knows the disease firsthand and how badly a cure is needed.

“It is such a nasty disease. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone,” she said. “As long as I am breathing, I am going to raise money for that organization.”

Huger raised more than $1,500 for the Making Strides Walk and is still collecting money. She raised $1,720 last year.

Huger said she was always proactive about her breast health before cancer was discovered, giving herself regular self-examinations and receiving annual mammograms.

“Never take good health for granted,” she said.

The doctors found questionable masses in Huger’s breasts in the past, so she wasn’t surprised when they found one during a December 2009 mammogram. A biopsy was ordered.

Huger, who hails from Washington, D.C., said she doesn’t have a family history of cancer.

“It never came back as cancer before,” she said. “That was a real shock.”

Huger had surgery, and the aggressive MammoSite 5-Day Targeted Radiation Therapy in February 2010 for stage one cancer.

During the process Huger, said she acted as her own health advocate — researching and praying at every step.

She said God didn’t give her the miraculous healing she asked for, but did provide a medial healing.

“I prayerfully made an educated decision,” she said. “When you know your options, you don’t have to accept what people tell you. You can then make an educated decision.”
