Most health and fitness experts admit it probably is not the best idea to start a diet during the holidays, but it is wise to at least maintain your weight during a season filled with delicious temptations.

Beth Langefels, communications director for the Dayton division of the American Heart Association, says the agency has just released a “Holiday Healthy Eating Guide” that is filled with practical advice on enjoying the tasty morsels of the holidays in sensible fashion.

The guide includes recipes, nutrition tips and ways to incorporate physical activity into your life.

Here are a few ideas the guide offers for navigating holiday parties:

• Make a heart-healthy item to bring to potluck parties.

• Be prepared for parties. If the party is after work, then enjoy a protein-packed lunch such as grilled fish or chicken with a salad and have another high-fiber snack later in the afternoon. If you’re not too hungry when you go to the after-work party, it will be easier to avoid overeating.

• Avoid loading up on foods that are fried, buttered or have a lot of cheese and cream. Even though the portions may be small, these fat-laden bites can really pack a punch. Look for fruit, veggies and dip, whole-grain crackers and baked or grilled items.

• Use the buddy system at the dessert table. By splitting a dessert with a friend, you can cut the calories and fat in half and avoid being wasteful, too.

• If alcohol is being served at a soiree, then alternate each glass with a glass of water. This will help reduce your thirst while filling your stomach so you’ll consume fewer calories.
