Poll: Nearly half of Ohioans have visited strip club

Divided committee approves new restrictions

COLUMBUS — Almost half of Ohioans admit to visiting a strip club, but voters are split on whether there should be statewide regulation of the adult clubs, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, the Ohio House Judiciary Committee voted 8-7 along party lines in favor of a bill that would force the clubs to shut down between midnight and 6 a.m. and mandate a no-touch rule between dancers and patrons. Democrats opposed the bill while Republicans supported it.

Extras

An earlier version of the bill had called for dancers keeping at least six feet away from patrons at all times but some lawmakers questioned whether that would pass constitutional muster.

"This is a very sad day for democracy. This is a very sad day for the dancers," said Angelina Spencer of the Association of Club Executives. "We will definitely be fighting this. This is unconstitutional. We'll go to court."

The bill moves to the full House tomorrow. If approved by the House, the bill returns to the Senate for consideration of changes made to the legislation. If both chambers approve it, the bill moves to Gov. Ted Strickland.

According to the Quinnipiac poll, 45 percent of Ohioans admit to having visited a strip club. Sixty-three percent of men and 28 percent of women say they have.

Broken down along party lines, independents are most likely to visit strip clubs at 53 percent, Republicans are second at 42 percent and Democrats are least likely at 40 percent. And then 34 percent of the white, born again, evangelicals admitted to visiting a strip club.

Forty-five percent of people surveyed support statewide regulation of strip clubs while 46 percent oppose it. Women are more likely to support statewide regulation – 53 percent – than men – 36 percent. And 51 percent of Ohioans who have been to a strip club oppose statewide regulation.

When it comes to regulating the hours, 43 percent of Ohioans support it while 48 percent oppose. When it comes to the 6-foot rule, 52 percent support it while 35 percent oppose it.

The poll, conducted May 8-13, surveyed 939 Ohio voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percent.

Make the Argument: This Law makes our streets safer, controls disease from spreading, will keep our children safe! If you can I’m for it! What I read is: We are allowing our lawmakers to set and control our own morals. This law sets a precedence that will allow liberals or conservatives to decide whats right or wrong for you. That AX swings both ways :) Write your congress man and tell him/her to focus on serving and protecting not inflicting his morale beliefs!

If you don’t like living by the Dixie Strip then move! I’m far from rich but I can afford to live in an apartment in a decent neighborhood away from the strip clubs.

I’m not ready for there to be more unemployed people draining our resources. It’s hard enough finding work around here as it is!

This is a very sad bill made to force religion on everybody for his or her own good. These religious zealots that think it is their job to save everybodies soul need to worry about themselves and let people make up their own minds. They have no regard for the welfare of the people they will be putting out of work or the amount of taxes the state will be losing and therefore putting the burden on everybody else because they have to be crusaders. It makes me sick. This used to be a nice country, where you were free to make your own decisions, until these Puritans came back to save us all. What’s next scarlet letters on womens clothing? Anybody who would vote to put any regulations on an adult club who know nothing about what really goes on inside of them are very ignorant.

What’s next?

Will they legislate how people can dance in regular nightclubs and bars… maybe even school dances?

They must have extra time now that the smoking laws are in place.

Shouldn’t legislation related to jobs and taxes or maybe illegal aliens be the priority for Ohio? Important issues?

Put thousands of taxpayers on welfare or state aid, just to satisfy a vocal group of religious voters, so they may in office.

Obviously all opposing this legislation probably doesn’t live near one of these establishments, and much less likely in the Harrison Twp N. Dixie area where these establishments have given N. Perhaps we need to get a petition together to outlaw the ccv. It almost sounds as if they qualify as a radical group that needs to be on a “watch list”. The way our state government has performed in the last year over these trivial issues I’d say we have a better than average chance of getting it passed.

Another waste of our legislators time. I echo others who have said if you don’t like it, don’t go. For those who mask this as a way to stop “drug trafficing and prostitution”, we already have laws in place for those crimes. All lawmakers who voted in favor of this ridiculous bill should be held accountable next election time. For God’s sake, we have a ton of other more serious and pressing issues in this state.

Our system for funding education has been found unconstitutional 4 times by the Ohio Supreme Court and they refuse to address this. The State of Ohio cheated the DPS out of $14 million dollars, and they refuse to address it. And yet those men and women have time to decide that some guy shouldn’t be touching a girl’s butt in a strip club?? No wonder our education system is a mess!!

Religious fundamentalism is often utilized to direct attention away from core issues in other regions around the world. While unemployment runs rampant in Pakistan, Saudia Arabia, Gaza & the West Bank, the political clerics in those regions use religious extreamism to deflect attention away from addressing the true reasons for their citizens’ discontent. Get people focused on funamental social issues and they forget they have no job. Only problem, this is Ohio, not the West Bank…

What’s next?

Why not limit all kinds of things that don’t affect anyone who doesn’t choose to be affected? Let’s have the government regulate even more of our daily lives. Let’s forget that we have freewill and personal responsibility. Let’s push our own religious beliefs on everyone else around us. How about we all start dressing in uniforms? Perhaps we can ban shorts and sleeveless shirts. Maybe we can regulate churches and their operating hours?

Phillip,

This is not a Christian nation. This is a country without religious affiliation. The last time I checked, when you look at a map next to the words United States of America, it is not followed in small print with the words “brought to you by God.” This is a country where you are free to worship any God or no God. I would imagine that a majority of people who frequent or work in strip clubs consider themselves Christian, so let’s not get all high and mighty.

I hope the CCV takes action next against preventing legalization of any kind of gambling in the state and banning the lottery. This state and nation has strayed far from our Christian roots and our nation has payed a great price for it. I am glad Ohio and the CCV is taking a lead in this effort.

this is the most retarded thing I have ever heard! There are way more important things going on than anything that is happening in a strip club. I don’t think it’s a big deal if the strippers can touch the customers or not and I don’t understand why strippers think that if they can’t touch them they aren’t going to have a job. This is being totally blown out of proportion but it’s a stupid thing to waste taxpayer money on.

Also, if the government is so keen on sending thousands of women (plus servers, bouncers, managers, bartenders, etc.) into unemployment, maybe they should take a good look at the economy they’re sending them into. I am bilingual with a college degree and I struggled to get a job, and I make less than some strippers that I know. Even if they have other skills, they’re going to be lucky in this area to get ten bucks an hour, and the taxpayers will be making up the difference!

If it’s going to be a misdemeanor for nude/semi-nude women to be touching someone else, or for someone to touch another’s clothed genetalia in public, then who’s going to be patrolling X-fest with all the topless women sitting on people’s shoulders? This law is nothing more than a right wing group imposing their views and beliefs on the rest of us. There are tons of other more pressing issues that our legislatures should be spending their time on. Rather, lawmakers have spent our valuable tax dollars talking about an issue that has no real effect on limiting crime, improving neighborhoods, or the overall morality of the state. Time will show that this law was arbitrary and was basically Phil Burress bitterness over his lack of self control

Were we really all that surprised about the numbers ? I think strip bars are a right of passage. Were we surprised that the former City manager of Riverside visited the clubs on North Dixie ? My only problem with him being at the club was he did it while he was suppose to be working, and mis-used his expense account, again our state government making another law to add to the thousands of other worthless laws we already have, attorneys making laws to keep themselves in business !!

Trish, If there is no intercourse there is no prostitution! By your definition we are all prostitutes. Every time you laugh at a dumb joke from your boss or when you pretend you really care about the problems of the car mechanic so they don’t try to repair things that aren’t really broken. Point is most people in these places just want companionship and to look at the beauty of God’s creation and you can’t do that as well from 6 feet and prior to midnight. We have laws against prostitution. We have laws governing decency in public places. Enforce those laws. They should be enough.

The proposed legislation isn’t forced morality. In case people have forgotten, this country was founded on Christianity. Besides, can’t anyone see that the regulations could actually “legitimize” the business, changing it from something most people associate with low-lifes & prostitutes, into something far more respectable? If these women need to touch their clients to make money, how is that different from prostitution? The new laws can only help them!

Go ahead and drive another nail in our economy coffin-take hundreds of ladies, some who make six figures a year, and put the dough right back into the economy, and pretty much make them paupers. Here we go with another law that just leads to more lawlessness. There is a demand for these businesses and if you try to curtail them it will just present opportunities for bootleg operations in the basements or back rooms of places where the business cannot be monitored at all and the women who work these jobs for a living will be the only losers. We cannot police our streets properly or enforce a smoking ban-why not legislate proper school funding and make a law that has a positive effect.

This article is either poorly written or the poll is skewed (or both). First, since 25% of the Ohio population is under the age of 18, and 51% is made up of women, the 45% of all Ohioans is a bit misleading. I just don’t find it credible. Since so much of the article is based upon the poll, it would have helped to know who took the poll and how it was conducted. Furthermore, it was very slanted to make the conservative population in favor of regulations look bad.

I guess I need to add Sam is a Goose to the long list of AKA’s for Cletus, Billis, Democrat Trash, etc. You must have been a “john” that got the clap from a hooker after work at your job at Rumpke with all your trash, whores, and disease references. I hear the Taliban are recruiting. They have similar beliefs to yours. Maybe all women in this country should wear burka’s too.

I’ve never been to a strip club but, I’m sure if I had I wouldn’t be sitting at the end of the dance floor with a handfull of dollar bills just so I could have a well perfumed and talcumed pair of silicone hooters rubbed on my face. No sir that just doesn’t interest me at all!

Nearly half?!? When did this poll take place? No one I know was ever polled. If “nearly half” of all Ohioans visited a strip club, then that would be like saying ALL the men (or ALL the women), since Ohio is probably just about evenly populated by both sexes. You can’t just poll around a thousand people and apply the results to a whole state! Did they poll them as they were leaving the strip club? Did they poll them at the grocery store? (see my point?)

Strip clubs are great for the economy. Give a dollar to a rich girl and she might save it. Give a dollar to a stripper and it will get put right back into the economy. And as far as I can see this is one job that can’t be outsourced. Maybe we should all be strippers.

If you don’t like strip bars, don’t go. We spend way too much time and energy trying to force beliefs onto others. What’s next? Communism?

I agree with the common sense approach. if YOU don’t like it, tough, let ME enjoy it in peace. when i was in Iraq i saw this same mindset towards “impure”things. whats next, do we stone the strippers as well. Besides, that excuse about drugs and prostution running rampant is a load of crap. that stuff is going to happen anywhere. bottom line, let me have the option of going to a strip club and have a beautiful, fake chested woman dance on me. if that isn’t nice, i dont know what is…

I’ll let you in on a little secret. These establishments are frequented by people of all political beliefs. This is about liberty not political affiliation you idiot. If you were a good Republican you would not want the government to interfere with commerce or be involved in regulation of any kind. You obviously are an advocate for big government and a closet Democrat. If Jerry Fallwell dies are we done discussing the issue?

Long live the strip clubs! What else is there to do in Ohio? If the women weren’t all so fat, ugly and unable to take care of their men, then guys wouldn’t need to go to strip clubs. What’s better than going to a dark skanky club to see some white trash single mom who just got done breast feeding her 2yr. old illegitimate child taking her top off and dancing around? You people got class! If you’ve ever been to the Indianapolis500 rednecks are flashing guys all day long-should we outlaw that race too

I haven’t decided how I feel yet, but listening to morons like Alex makes me want to vote against it. I am guessing that he is some pimp wannabe living down in the projects with just enough money for internet access. Alex, your mom is calling. Little weenie.

I’m glad we have this law.

If we didn’t, I’d be going to strip clubs regularly and strip clubs are like gateway drugs. Once I go to a strip club, the next thing you know, I’ll be raping women on my lunch hour and well on my way to becoming a pediphile.

A. The large majority of strippers that perform are not dumb. The propably could put together a sentence better than half of the people leaving derogatory comments. B. They are just trying to get by like most people. And if you got to know one then you wouldnt be saying all of this vulgar talk. C. This would put nearly 10,000 people out of jobs and I think that ohio is already struggling with unemployment so think what Senate Bill 16 would do.

I’m glad to see the concensus on here is that this entire poll is just disgusting. I’m speechless that this has even become an issue. What next? I cant go to Hustler and buy a pocket rocket? What I choose to do in my spare time is MINE as long as its SAFE and not harming others, and this is exactly what strip clubs represent. Its safe and harmless.I understand the smoking ban b/c it does danger health, but STRIPPERS? Since when does one’s pleasure become a legal issue?? Unbelievable………….

Eventually we are going to have minority status for cheap dumb whores and they will get affirmative action. You watch and see. These stupid strippers for democracy are pushing it like it is a skin color. In essence they are all just cheap dumb hos that can’t get a job anywhere else.

I am all for dumb white trash shaking their trailer park bootie. Who cares if they have the IQ of a chimp if their butt is firm. We all know strippers are stupid skanks that couldn’t hold a job anywhere else, that is why we like their stupid butts. Dumb free love.

I went to a strip club my freshman year of college. Its an experience, not always for the reasons you might think. One of the people that went in our group recognized an English professor getting a lap dance. It’s been almost 10 years since I went, and its still one of my better memories of my first year in college.

Hey heavy b. you are a fat hog. why don’t you go back into your hole in the ground and eat poop. You like whores fine, but I think that they should all move out to the sea in a boat and sink themselves. There is nothing nastier than some old skanky diseased whore. You are a lard

I am just curious, do you dumb democrats haul your own houses when you move, or do you have someone else do it. You sound like those monkeys on Jerry Springer. You are all white and black trash and need to go back to your trailers. You are whores, your friends are whores, your wives are whores and your moms are whores. Seriously, have some self respect. You whore yourselves out for a buck. You should all eat rat poison and cleanse our society.

This bill is so frivolous – are we really going to let this small group of busybodies, which have nothing more to do than corner people on the street for signatures, impose their narrow minded beliefs on all of Ohio? They are an embarrassment to Christians around the world. Their goal is to make the industry so unprofitable by imposing their ridiculous rules, that there are no strip clubs. I love the people that have known a dancer that went to ruin- I know a software developer that went to ruin- who cares. Also, DDN – what kind of ridiculous poll is this Quinnipiac University poll? Statistically they polled 50% women in the 939 voters – how is that a representative sample of who may or may not have gone to a strip club? Hello- MEN go to strip bars as overwhelming demographic. And most of the Christian right that are hiding in the dark corner of Diamonds are not even going to admit that they go. What’s next, forced snake handling?

Let’s face it… the only people who are against strip clubs are the wives and girlfriends who don’t take care of their men. Regulating a strip club still won’t take care of their needs. Think long and hard about it. I

t isn’t the strip club that is the problem… it is you. Change yourself and you will find that the strip club isn’t as big of a threat to your relationship as you are.
