Miami Valley Hospital and the Springboro Community City Schools complex will announce a $10.9 million partnership agreement Tuesday afternoon.

Hospital and school officials were gathering at the Springboro High School football stadium to announce the facility will be renamed CareFlight Field as part of an agreement giving the hospital exclusive naming rights throughout the district, according to Linda Oda, public inforrmation officer for the school district.

Extras

The district will receive $1.9 million for naming rights to be used to add artificial turf and redo the press box at the stadium located in the complex off Ohio 741.

"In addition to that, Springboro schools is going to build a 40,000 square foot building behind the press box. We will be leasing 27,500 square feet back to them" for a range of doctors' offices, Oda said.

"They will be putting doctors' offices in Springboro on the hill," Oda said, referring to the elevated ground behind the high school and junior high of Ohio 741, south of downtown Springboro.

Tim Grimes, a vice president at Miami Valley Hospital and Springboro resident, "was instrumental in pushing this project forward," Oda said.

Now I know how MVH can afford this deal!!!!! CBS Evening News just did a segment on health insurance. Seems that if you have had any type of malady say Acne to Asthma you can be rejected for health coverage—-even if you can afford it!!! You can get a very watered down plan with hardly any coverage for one person for $538 a month. What the insurance does not provide you bet the hospital will get you for.

CONGRATS to Boro for having a VP in your schools support system. Now to Midd. and Miami Valley Premier MGt. You can kiss our a**.

The rest of the schools in the area ought to boycott your services and go with DSMI and Kettering Hospital. BOYCOTT MIAMI VALLEY AND MIDDLETOWN HOSPITAL NOW !

In fact if i need a careflight….let me die……..

Congratulations, Springboro!!! Execellent work!!!

I only wish that Middletown’s “dumb as a box of rocks” city leaders could’ve swung something like this. Instead, they PAID Middletown Regional (now Atrium) MILLIONS and MILLIONS to: a) keep “Middletown” in its name (did I mention it is now named ATRIUM?) b) move from its present central location to WARREN COUNTY!!

Any chance that your council members could establish residence in Middletown at least a year before the next election???

BoroMom, you brought up the strip club subject. I will then assume you know alot about that subject. As far as the don’t believe everything you read, I was at mom’s restaurant when the sheriff and police surrounded the cars of the kids making a gun exchange for drugs. Didn’t need to read that one. So go on living in your dream world. Hard facts, but thats whats going on. Enjoy your life, such as it is.

Terry,

My SON happens to have a full ride ACADEMIC scholorship waiting after graduation from SHS. You’ve once again made another assumption without all the facts!!! When HE has a very bright career in the future thanks in part to his parents picking a great school system for him to attend now, you might be making YOUR living at one of those places you seem to know so much about.

BoroMom, I’m sure you’ll do a good enough job of dressing up your pre-strip club cheerleader to not need a strip club built there. If you’re lucky New York New York will hire after graduation. It’s obvious you are one of those sports only in school type parents. Probably because of your lack of confidence in being able to assist in your childs education. Schools are for education. Period! Any time one of these corrupt deals comes down the pike it is not good in the long run.

You people that are gaga over this deal need to wake up!!! 1. MVH is not paying for this development. Tax dollars from State of Ohio funds are being used. MVH is entering into a lease agreement that in theory will re-pay the loans over the next 22 years. 2. Those benefitting from this deal are, the football and track programs and their repective fans and cheerleaders (maybe the band for pre-game and halftime only), and students whose medical insurance covers these doctors. Who gets the benefit of any revenue the Stadium will bring in? Do these monies go to athletics, general education???? What?? Where??? Think about it. This Stadium is used mainly for football and track and field. 2 sports. What about golf, hockey, volleyball, soccer etc.?

One way or another the taxpayers of this community will get socked with some cost in this fiasco.

Centerville paid for their facilities by fundraising. Others by levy. This is just another backdoor way of skirting the tax payers.

Who is carrying the construction loan? Who pays for the upkeep of the building? Generally the owner pays.

That stadium is owned by the people of Springboro. Not by the School Board. What gives them the exclusive right to rename the Stadium and sign an ethically questionable if not legal contract? I have not heard anything regarding this until now. The School Board has done other questionable handlings of money in the 70’s when they built the old hig

Can anyone accept the fact that this is a great opportunity for our kids and the school? Without raising our taxes AGAIN. They are building a medical facility people, not a strip club that would attract child molesters! STUPID comment. Terry, get therapy for your issues. Ryan you are calling me old and then referencing Bob Dylan? Please. I dont know if hanging on to the past is where I stand or not, but I can tell you that when deals like this come down the pike, its only because someone is getting their pockets lined. Springboro schools have drained taxpayers pockets and the resulting product has declined. Students being put out are no better for all the money spent. Look into your school and you will see the biggest drug and gun problems in this area.

Yes, athletics are part of the education process as are every other extra cirricular activity. You may not like it but that is the way it is. You may rather see things such as the drama club or concert band get a new auditorium but the reality is that athletics get the most exposure. These are the times we livein like it or not.

No matter what the school board does your always going to have people disagree. I think its a great thing and Im very excited. No sports aren’t everything but they keep a lot of kids out of trouble. We have a wonderful school system and Im very proud to be part of it. Ive lived in Springboro all my life and I know have kids in the system, yes it has changed a lot but so has everything else in life. There are a lot of good people in Springboro, some with a lot of money and some not so much.

While we’re at it, why not embark on a landmark partnership with Hausfeld’s Salon and Day Spa. Borrow $3 million more from the State and build an additional 20,000 sq ft. The additional space would be leased to Hausfeld’s for the exclusive pampering of football cheerleaders and player’s moms.

According to the “OneWhoKnows” The schools are using taxpayer dollars to fund EDUCATION and finding creative ways to fund other improvements to their facilities. If anything, Springboro is doing the right thing here, by not using taxpayer dollars irresponsibly. Since when is EDUCATION what you learn on a ball field? And actually funding a private entity with loan proceeds is irresponsible use of TAXPAYER dollars, especially after all tehe failed levies this past May that schools needed to pass.

Somebody might want to check my math on this but I don’t know if the numbers work. The deal is 11 million. Financed at 4.6% for 22 years I come up with payments of $66,320.15 per month or $795,841.80 per year. Total payback would be $17,508,520. Lease payments range from $720,000 to $1.1 million annually. Not knowing the exact rent schedule we cannot calculate whether or not there will be a total payback. But it does appear there may be a negative cashflow initially.

If anything, Springboro is doing the right thing here, by not using taxpayer dollars irresponsibly. Look at Kettering as an example, they have beautiful, state of the art athletic facilities that were funded with tax dollars from bond issues. Springboro has found a way to get the same results without having to do this!

Am I the only wondering why state education funds are being used to build a MVH hospital center directly related to sports?? Even if MVH is paying it back, the funds are gone…What in the heck is the state doing funding private enterprise?? Is the state’s education priorities really this misaligned with what is needed?

As I understand it MVH is a nonprofit hospital. Mind boggling amounts of money come in and are on reserve regardless of what MVH officials say. Non profits can only have so much money in reserve so they have to spend it.

Do you really think someone is going to choose MVH because their name is on a ballfield? Please!!!!!

Building a business park on taxpayers property? I had to pay property tax for the years I lived in Springboro and I don’t have children. Now some business is going to make money on this deal. Yes They are giving money but what a tax write off they get. All the while I am paying more property tax to fund these schools that look like the Taj Mahal. I say Bull Hockey to this deal and if it goes thru, where is my cut? Schools should be funded by the people that use them period.

This is a great thing for Springboro and our schools. There is no way a levy would be passed to provide for athletic upgrades like this. The Board did what it needed to do. If other districts complain about such a deal, it is obvious jealousy (or stupidy) on their part for not engaging MVH first. This also bring the possibility for more revenue in terms of renting the field for playoff games.

MVH would be idiots not to partner in Springboro. Hospitals are businesses, not missions or churches. So you’d have them do the same for Dayton schools? Can you attract doctors to a poor, dying city during a doctor and nurse shortage? MVH chose to do business in the second fastest growing county in Ohio. Brilliant! Don’t be surprised if Lakota schools/West Chester is next. How else can hospitals pay for the uninsured who walk into the ER daily? They have to make money somewhere.

I’m sorry, but wasn’t it not long ago that the City of Springboro was asking its residents to pay more taxes so they could fund their schools? Now they are basically building something else like a football stadium? I think people need to step back and see where their priorities are.

I would be willing to bet that Kettering Medical Ctr is scrambling today to make an alliance with Kettering Schools. My biggest worry is the amount of $ that MVH and Premier are paying over 22 years. Where is this money coming from- with a new Hospital on Clyo Rd, MVH is bailing out Middletown Hosp, and Greene Hosp with brand new facilities, and they still take more than their fair share of indigents and eat the cost, along with Good Sam. Man, that’s alot of money floating around.

By Gary

May 16, 2007 8:58 AM | Link to this

This is disturbing on many levels. Since the loan for the project will come from a State fund set up for schools the money will come from taxpayers all over Ohio. I for one do not care to subsidize Springboro athletics. This also shows our society’s over emphasis on athletics. Could the money from this “partnership” be better used to develop educational opportunities in science, math or even health care? I believe additional engineers, scientists, and doctors are better then more “jocks”.

Who is the developer? Generally speaking, neither the School Board or MVH management are smart enough to put a deal like this together, and then create a press release to pre-empt public criticism. So WHO IS THE DEVELOPER ?? You know, the guys that write the contract for short term profit, without long term risk, which ultimately places this LIABILITY on Springboro schools?

Schools can’t win. Ask the taxpayers for more money for Athletics? They vote down levies to pay teachers! Fundraise? Neighbors and local businesses are hounded by constant fundraising. Parents already pay fees for programs. There is no room in the budgets and you can’t look to the State of Ohio for any money.

So Springboro’s board works for a year on a deal to improve the athletic facility without having to do the things mentioned above. THIS ISN’T A WIN?

Not bad for a corporation that was on the brink of bankrupcy. All that talk about how they couldn’t get a deal with Anthem because they wouldn’t pay them any money. Let’s see, the citizens of Montgomery and Warren counties suffered for a year, employees got laid off, and now they can afford to pay a school system 10 million dollars to name their football stadium? Not to mention where did they get the money to build two $90+ million facilities. Sounds like they lied to the public about everything

Great idea and partnership. Each party gets what they need. MVH gets exposure in the South market. Springboro schools gets much needed revenue. Steve - MVH is NON-PROFIT. It cannot afford to take care of the poor and uninsured in Montgomery county unless it has market share in the areas with insured patients. Everyone in Dayton has access to healthcare because of the generosity of MVH and Good Samaritan Hospitals.

Springboro is destined to be the ghost town of tomorrow. Already it is nothing more than a housing project. The city can not sustain its own growth as evident that it must draw its water supply from Franklins river. The planners of Warren County as a whole have destroyed with over growth what was once a beautiful area. Where there used to be occasional houses with land around is nothing more than stick houses with plastic coverings. Look at those for sale signs and the sherriffs auctions.

Springboro is not the Springboro small town values of old. Obviously this is a lot of cash for the schools, but poor decision making. You have just shown that the educational system can be bought and paid for. Plain and simple. Springboro had to do this because Mason already cinched the deal with Middletown Regional a few months back. People that are happy for this are the same people that could care less about the area, only think their student athlete is going to be the next overpaid player.

I, like many bloggers here would have been mad, (or better yet lets just call it what it is; jealousy) had this deal been done in another community. But it was not done in another community, so I am estatic that my School Board had the foresight to “think out of the box” and they got this deal done! The partnership between the Springboro Schools and Miami Valley Hospital is a landmark agreement. This deal represents a significant investment by Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton’s southernmost suburb. The growth in Dayton is south and Miami Valley Hospital is positioning itself to be the name that is best known in Springboro. As MVH recognizes this, so too should other major players in the healthcare, retail and commercial sectors.

Steve, MVH is a non-profit organization. MVH is also building a new facility for their neonatal nursery (for the poor also). MVH is a private insitution providing service to the public. Apparently, they spend money where the return will be the greatest so they can continue to spend money on non-reimbursed services (the poor). The joint venture with Springboro Schools seems like a win-win for both institutions. Schools get money for their field and MVH gets offices for phsysicians.

Whenever a government agency or a public institution, like a hospital or school, advertises, I always feel a little squeamish about the expenditure of dollars for that service. I know MVH is a for profit entity, but it is also a public institution. The ad in a playbill or local newspaper or magazine is fine. But millions of dollars that might have been spent on pre-natel care for the poor, medicine for the homeless or whatever are gone on a vanity project.
