MIDDLETOWN — Middletown High's boys basketball team is ranked No. 9 in the state, according to the first Associated Press poll of the season released Monday evening, Jan. 12.
The Middies (9-1) totaled 73 voting points and received one first-place vote.
"That's great," MHS coach Bob Ronai said. "It feels good without a doubt. It's always an honor and hopefully we'll continue to stay in the Top 10 the rest of the season."
Ronai was unsure of the last time the Middies were ranked in the state poll. The last time Middletown was crowned as the state poll champion was in 1975, when they were No. 1 in Division AAA.
Middletown has won an Ohio-best seven state championships (1944, 1946, 1947, 1952, 1953, 1956 and 1957).
Bill Edwards Jr. leads the Middies with 17.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Allen Roberts also averages 14.7 points per game.
Middletown will visit Princeton, which is ranked fourth in the state, on Jan. 27. The Middies host Oak Hills on Friday night.
In the D-III poll, Madison (8-1) is ranked 13th with 44 points.
"We're very excited," Madison coach Jeff Smith said. "That's a positive kind of pressure. Now we have to step up and earn that kind of respect. I hope our kids use it as the right motivation."
Matt Houser leads the Mohawks with 13.7 points per game.
