Post office raises rates
Wednesday, February 11, 2009
The U.S. Postal Service will be raising the price of a first-class stamps to 44 cents effective May 11.
Until then, Forever Stamps will continue to be sold for the current 42-cent rate and will remain valid in the future regardless of rate hikes, the office said.
The hike is tied to the rate of inflation. The U.S. Postal Service lost $2.8 billion last year and is considering ways to cut costs, including reducing delivery to five days a week.
Other rate changes taking effect May 11 include:
• Postcard stamps increase to 27 cents.
• The first ounce of a large envelope increases to 88 cents.
• The first ounce of a parcel increases to $1.22.
• International postcard and letter prices increase to 75 cents for Canada; 79 cents for Mexico; and 98 cents elsewhere.
