Elvis is in the (school) building

Children rewarded for exceeding reading goal

FRANKLIN — Schenck Elementary School students got a visit from the king himself for exceeding their reading goal.

Amateur Elvis impersonator and Principal Tim Crowe donned a white suit with gold jewels for the students Monday, Nov. 3.

As girls shrieked, students laughed and loud applause filled the gymnasium, Crowe performed Elvis hits for the crowd.

"He was funny," said third-grader Victoria Charles. "I was thinking he was really Elvis."

The show was a reward for exceeding their challenge to read 1,000 books of at least 20 pages. The students exceeded that goal with 1,864 books.

Students also had a dance and refreshments, just some of the Right to Read Week fun.

For this year's election-themed week, they voted with loose change for a literary president.

It was a close race at Schenck, but newly elected President Cat in the Hat pulled ahead in the final hours of voting.

The cat beat out rival Harry Potter by just 49 cents; the election raised $100 for the Warren County Humane Society.

Brendon Isaacs, 9, said he supported the Cat in the Hat.

"I just think he's kind of funny," the third-grader said.

"I like his hat," said second-grader Maxx Bruce, 8.

The school also held its own mock presidential election, with Sen. John McCain winning by 12 percent.

"I would like to thank you for voting for me," said fifth-grader Christian Wood, who posed as McCain for campaign events at the school.
