HAMILTON — As his parents made funeral arrangements for their only son, police continue to piece together what happened before the teen was struck by two cars on Ohio 129 and killed Monday night, Aug. 18.
Tyler Lee
Reiff, 14, a former Garfield Middle School student who excelled at wrestling, would have started the ninth grade next week at Hamilton Freshman School.
Reiff's BMX-style bike was found unscathed and lying on its side near the path that leads to his home, hundreds of feet from where the teen was hit as he crossed the highway, police said.
Reiff's parents, Melissa Partin and Terry Reiff, said it doesn't make any sense, because their son never abandoned his bike, which he built, and never before crossed the highway where the accident occurred.
Police are interviewing friends and family and retracing Reiff's steps to determine a time line of events leading up to the accident, said Hamilton police spokesman Dave Crawford.
Counselors will be available for students and staff when school starts on Thursday, Aug. 28. A Garfield Middle School administrator and counselor will be at the freshman school and extra support staff will be available at Buchanan Elementary and Garfield. A counselor also will be present at the school's open house scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 26.
Visitation for Reiff is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 330 Pershing Ave. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the funeral home, followed by burial at Rose Hill Burial Park.
