Middletown gets first regional office in Ohio for Obama campaign
Monday, July 21, 2008
Middletown is now a campaign hub for Democrats in a four-county region.
The regional office for the campaign of presumptive presidential nominee U.S. Sen. Barack Obama — the first in Ohio — will open its doors at 7 p.m. today, July 21, for an open house and gathering place for Obama supporters.
The regional office, which covers Butler, Warren, Clinton and Preble counties, is located in the space formerly used by Broadway News inside the Commercial Building at 55 S. Main St.
"We wanted to make sure we're out and visible in the community. This will be the first of many offices across the state," said Isaac Baker, the director of communications for the Obama campaign.
"What this shows is that we're committed to campaigning everywhere in Ohio and reaching out to the volunteers where they live," Baker said.
The new office could be a much-needed shot in the arm for Middletown, said Ed Hall, building owner. He noted the campaign chose his building over 40 locations in Butler and Warren counties.
"Besides the Broad Street Bash, we still haven't got a foundation on this side of town permanently. This headquarters just kind of fell into place, and it really helps and supports us.
"It might be a bit of a pick-me-up for downtown," Hall said.
The campaign might make use of much of the space in the building, including the opera house. And Hall hopes for one particular coup.
"Hopefully he (Obama) will make a stop here," he said.
The open house event will include food and refreshments, live music and guest speakers.
