Driver OK after cement truck accident
Thursday, July 03, 2008
An accident on Bypass Ohio 4 sent a car and cement truck off the busy road around 9 a.m. today, Thursday, July 3, but resulted in no significant injuries.
Justin Abney, 19, of Fairfield Twp. was driving a 2001 Chrysler north on the bypass just after 9 a.m. when he leaned across the car to reach something, said Fairfield Twp. Sgt. Vernon Shobe.
Abney lost control of the vehicle, which swerved into southbound traffic and hit a 10-wheel Moraine Materials cement truck driven by Kenneth Haddix.
The 16-ton cement truck and its 10-ton load veered off the road and into the trees, dislodging two wheels in the process. Haddix was not injured in the crash.
The Chrysler crossed the road before it came to rest on the other side. The vehicle receive "extensive damage" in the crash and was carted away from the scene.
Abney was cited for rules for driving in marked lanes, police said. He suffered burns from airbags that deployed in his vehicle but declined medical transportation.
"If the cement truck driver didn't take evasive action, it would have been a lot worse," Shobe said.
