If gas prices are stifling your travel plans this weekend, consider heading to one of the local Independence Day events.

Franklin tradition

The Franklin: "A Family Tradition" parade will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, July 4, on Park Avenue just across Lions Bridge. The parade will march its way to Main Street and then on Sixth Street to Community Park. Franklin's Lake family, the owners of former Lake Jewelry, will lead the festivities.

Festival in Middletown

Although Middletown is without a fireworks show, the city's parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Rosa Parks Elementary School and head to Smith Park. After the parade, the Young American Youth Amateur Sport will play host to a festival with rides and games at Smith Park. The festival is scheduled to run from 2 to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Admission is free but there will be a small fee for food and rides.

Monroe to Light Up The Sky

A parade will kick off the weekend on Friday at 5 p.m. It will leave from the Kroger parking lot on Heritage Green Drive, travel down Macready Avenue to Elm Street and end at Community Park. The "Light Up The Sky" festival is being held at James Monroe Park on Main Street from 3 to 10 p.m. Friday, July 4, and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 5. The event will include live bands performing, games, family activities such as a car show, sack races, a dog agility exhibition, an adult and kids Corn Hole tournament and rides. Fireworks also will illuminate the skies beginning at dusk each night.
