Man reports finding glass in cheeseburger

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

FRANKLIN — A diner reported Tuesday, June 17, that a small shard of glass got stuck in his tongue as he ate a double cheeseburger from the McDonald's restaurant on Second Street.

Jon Childers of Franklin said he was at home eating his meal when he noticed the glass. He said he immediately called the restaurant to complain and was told by an employee that a coffeepot had been broken earlier in the day.

Childers said he went into the restaurant to file a claim, but became irritated with how he was being treated.

"I've not gotten an apology," he said. "I just want some kind of apology. I'm not after no million dollars."

Assistant Manager Mark Search said Childers' complaint was sent to the fast-food restaurant's insurance company, which will conduct an investigation. Search acknowledged a coffeepot did break, but noted it was not near food.

Search described the shard of glass as the size of a grain of salt, and said no other customers have made similar claims.

Childers said he doesn't know if he swallowed any glass, and noted that he hasn't sought medical treatment. He said the company's insurance provider asked him to bring the glass into the restaurant so it could be determined if it came from the same coffeepot.

Childers remains in possession of the piece of glass.

Man held in assault of ex-girlfriend

MADISON TWP. — A Middletown man was arrested Tuesday, June 17, after he allegedly attacked the mother of his child outside her home on Middletown-Germantown Road.

Ashley Tincher got a ride home with a friend after she got a call from a baby-sitter saying her ex-boyfriend, Christin M. McKinney, 22, was outside pounding on the door, according to court records.

McKinney allegedly climbed into the house through a window. When Tincher pulled up with Adam Bercik, McKinney broke out the vehicle's passenger window and struck Tincher twice, she said. He then hit Bercik with a baseball bat, according to court records.

Tincher and Bercik ran into the house and locked the door. McKinney then allegedly climbed in through the window again to continue the fight.

McKinney was arraigned Tuesday for felonious assault with a weapon, two counts of burglary, domestic violence and criminal damaging in Middletown Municipal Court and is being held in the city jail on a $76,000 bond.

Thieves haul off tons of rebar

Thieves hauled off several tons of fabricated reinforcement bars worth more than $7,300 this weekend from a construction site on Woodcreek Drive in the Renaissance development.

Son Tran reported the theft at 7:13 a.m. Monday, June 16. Tran said he believed the thieves used a universal key to operate a backhoe at the site and load the stolen rebar.

Middletown police Lt. Rodney Muterspaw said theft of metal from construction sites and vacant homes has become a constant problem in the city.

"It's every day," he said. "Most of the people we arrest tell us it was to buy drugs."
