LIBERTY TWP. — More than 55 kids and adults with special needs tried their hands at catching the big one during Lake Monroe's 20th annual Handicapped Fishing Derby Sunday, May 18.
Fishermen and women from Middletown, Franklin, Springboro, Trenton, and Madison and West Chester townships made the trip to Lake Monroe on Linn Road, said Sandy Luksic, who organized the event.

"They were catching fish like crazy," Luksic said.
With all the activities going on, catching fish was only part of the fun.
The free event had 142 sponsors this year. Aside from the fishing, the day featured Shriners clowns with their miniature cars, an Elvis impersonator, an "old fashioned" picnic, the Amazing Circus Stilt Walkers, a petting zoo and a hot air balloon.
"The men who run the fishing part every year say 'Sandy when are the kids going to fish?'" Luksic said.
There also were door prizes. Everyone who participated received a T-shirt, sunglasses and a trophy for their efforts. Others won tickets to the Cincinnati Reds and the Newport Aquarium during special drawings throughout the day.
"It's all about the family," Luksic said. "It was windy and a little chilly, but 55 kids had a ball."
