A local service club has honored four area high school students for their service to others.

Citizens for Youth gave the awards to Franklin High School seniors Casey Detro and James Pretorius and Carlisle High School senior Jacob Parks and junior Allyson Doliboa at a dinner Thursday, May 8, at the Deardoff Senior Center. Each received a plaque and a $100 gift card.

Casey Detro

Detro, daughter of Dale and Cindy Detro of Dale Avenue, Franklin, was nominated by Franklin High School teacher Lori Feltner. Detro volunteers untold hours through her church, according to Feltner, helping out in the children's ministry and vacation Bible School. She also worked on an "extreme home makeover project" for a local woman. She has helped with a soccer game for special needs children, helped with a walk for the Community Pregnancy Center's Walk for Life for the past five years; tutored Gerke sixth-graders; volunteered at Hannah's Treasures, packing gifts for needy families and placed flags on veterans' graves for Memorial Day.

Allyson Doliboa

Doliboa, daughter of Dennis and Becky Doliboa of Franklin-Trenton Road, was nominated by Joyce Libecap. She cited Doliboa's volunteer services at the New Jersey Presbyterian Church in Carlisle where she has helped with vacation Bible school, the Youth Club and Storytime for Tweens. She also visits area nursing home residents and runs errands for senior citizens. Doliboa volunteers at the Franklin-Springboro Public library, tutors at the elementary school and worked with Hometown Productions on a hospice fundraiser.

"Allyson is a very kind and considerate young lady," said Libecap. "She has a smile for everyone and is always willing to help."

Jacob Parks

Parks, son of James and Cheri Parks of Natix Court is a three-sport athlete at Carlisle who has helped out at a youth basketball camp for the last four years.

He also has traveled on three mission trips for his church and participates annually in the Carlisle clothing drive.

Heather Allison, the high school guidance counselor who nominated Parks, noted he also has been seen painting homes for the elderly in the community.

James Pretorius

Pretorius, son of Diana and the late Brian Parks of Rose Marie Road, was nominated by guidance counselor Gary Sturm.

Pretorius, who ranks fourth in his senior class, "is one of the most respected students in our building. He is extremely conscientious and one of the most positive students I have known," said Sturm.

Pretorius has taken part in youth mission trips to Chicago and Atlanta; worked at a homeless shelter; assisted in food and clothing drives; worked with Habitat for Humanity and is a YMCA swim coach for children who have multiple disabilities. He also has an interest in nature, helping with signs at Bull's Run Arboretum at Middletown and working on the steps at Miami University Middletown's nature path.

"I think I speak for everyone when I say we don't do this for the awards — although we appreciate them," said Pretorius. "We do it for our inner self, because it makes us feel good."
