Young children, older adults and people with respiratory illnesses should avoid long-term exposure outside today and Tuesday, as the area is once again under a smog alert.

Officials from the Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services — which serves Butler, Clermont, Hamilton and Warren counties — issued the alert for today as temperatures are expected to top out around 95 degrees. On Tuesday, temperatures are predicted to exceed 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Smog is formed when ozone is created from a reaction between certain chemicals, heat and sunlight, making breathing difficult for some groups.

Environmental services is based out of Cincinnati, but monitoring stations have been established in Hamilton and Middletown.

The NWS predicts temperatures to drop beginning Wednesday — when rain is also forecast — into the middle 80s and high 70s by week's end.
