The Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services has issued a smog alert for counties in southwest Ohio, including Butler and Warren.
The alert means active children and adults and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion, according to the department, which serves Butler, Clermont, Hamilton and Warren counties.
Making it more difficult to breathe are the stifling temperatures predicted through Friday.
As a result, the National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a heat advisory through Tuesday morning.
A heat advisory is issued when temperatures and humidity levels are combined to make the atmosphere feel like it's 100 degrees or hotter.
Butler County residents are being asked by the NWS to avoid long periods of work in the sun or poorly ventilated areas and drink plenty of water.
The NWS said they expect Wednesday or Thursday to be the hottest days this week, with temperatures in the upper 90s near 100.
