Local Navistar plant to shut down for one week
Wednesday, January 28, 2009
Springfield, Ohio — Slow economic conditions affecting the truck industry continue to have local effects.
The Navistar truck production facility on Urbana Road will be shut down next week, Feb. 2-8, said Roy Wiley, company spokesperson.
The shut-down will also impact the company's production plant in Escobedo, Mexico, and the Truck Service Center, 5975 Urbana Road.
The two production facilities manufacture medium-duty trucks and the TSC customizes and makes minor alterations to Navistar trucks from a number of production facilities.
When the Springfield plant is placed on temporary shut-down, workers are considered on short-term layoff, said United Auto Workers union Local 402 President Jason Barlow.
That means for one week, all represented employees receive unemployment and sub-pay, which is supplemental pay from the company, Barlow said. Other benefits remain unchanged.
This is the first unscheduled shut-down at the Springfield plant this year, but there were two others in 2008.
