Community remembers "Mason Angels"
Husband, father charged in deaths; remains 'serious' in hospital
[an error occurred while processing this directive]Saturday, January 12, 2008
MASON — A community came together Saturday to remember four "Mason Angels" and their mother killed Friday night.
Flowers, stuffed animals and a white cross with the victims' names paid tribute to Marguerite, 8, Vincent, 4, Jacob and Mia, both 3, and their mother, Nadya Ferrari Veillette, 33.
Extras
Father and husband Michel Veillette, 34, was charged in the apparent homicides with murder, aggravated arson and four counts of aggravated murder, according to Mason police.
He remained in serious condition Saturday night at University Hospital in Cincinnati, where he is under 24 hour guard, police said.
Warren County Prosecutor Rachel Hutzel said Saturday the investigation is too new to determine whether she will seek the death penalty. She said she expects to make that decision Monday.
School saddened
A third-grade student at Mason Heights Elementary School, Marguerite was "just a darling young lady," said school spokeswoman Tracey Carson. Carson said school staff described the girl, who spoke French and English and was learning Spanish, as "absolutely vivid, cheerful and fun."
The girl, a student at Mason for two years, was writing a story about how much she loved her mother and had drawn a picture of her family. The picture was found Saturday morning in her desk.
"Everything just said (she was) a happy, cheerful child," Carson said.
Carson said Nadya Veillette "just loved her kids tremendously."
An active school volunteer, Nadya Veillette was one to hug her children's teachers as she pushed her twins in a stroller through the school's hallways.
She would often walk her son, Vincent, to pre-school at the Mason Early Childhood Center and "was just a lovely lady," Carson said.
Counselors will be available at both schools Monday as students return to classes.
Marguerite's classmates will participate in a tribute to the girl "to allow them to say goodbye," Carson said.
Neighbor reacts
One of the family's neighbors, Priya Varadarajan, whose children played with the Veillette children in their adjoining back yards, said she didn't know the family well but had never heard any fighting.
"My kids used to play with their kids in the back yard and had fun," she said. "They were sweet angels. It just goes to show you never know what can happen."
She said she didn't know what the family's father did for a living other than that he was a consultant who traveled four days a week.
Nadya Veillette apparently worked part-time.
Michel Veillette
Police have not been able to question Michel Veillette as of Saturday, said Mason Police Chief Ron Ferrell.
According to a background check, Veillette was the principal of Airsoft Toys in Trenton, starting in May of 2001, working out of a property he and his wife sold in 2006., just before they moved to the Mason address.
Airsoft toy weapons look exactly like real military weapons — rifles, hand grenades, etc. Airsoft games are similar to Paintball games, but are played generally in the woods, according to an Airsoft Web site. Airsoft players wear real military gear, not the bright orange jumpsuits usually worn in Paintball.
Veillette was apparently an Airsoft games enthusiast and a co-creator of Team Strikers Ohio, an Airsoft gaming group, in which he was a rifleman, according to that group's Web site. On the team, Veillette was known by the handle "Punisher." He described himself in these words: "I play by Punisher's rules. Hit me once and I double back you," and he listed his achievement as "lead teams to Victory."
Family Background
Veillette's family is from the Saint-Lin-Laurentides, Quebec, area, according to the Windsor (Ontario) Star newspaper. In 2006, his father, 59-year-old Richard Veillette, was killed in a two-van collision in New York State as he was driving home to Quebec from visiting his son in Ohio. Veillette's mother, Louise, and another passenger survived the crash.
Louise Veillette declined comment Saturday, referring calls to her son, Eric Veillette, according to the Ontario paper.
Eric's wife, who did not give her name, said the family had only recently heard about the deaths.
"We just spoke to the police and for now there is nothing confirmed and there is no history of violence," Michel Veillette's sister-in-law said in a phone interview with the Windsor Star. "It's just a very normal family. There's nothing, nothing that we can say. You know what, we spoke with Michel at 6:30 yesterday. He was driving home and we were like hoping he was going to be at home before the kids were going to be in bed."
The Fire
The Veillette's home, on Brackenview Court, was reported on fire at about 9:59 p.m. Friday. When emergency crews arrived at the house, they found Veillette outside, according to the Windsor Star report.
"He had some head trauma and what appeared to be some wounds that would not be consistent with a fire," Sgt. Jeff Burson said.
The rest of the family were found in the upper floor of the multi-story single-family house, according to the Canadian newspaper.
In Mason, a woman who lives in the Hickory Woods development was driving home Friday night when she spotted the fire.
"There's flames coming out the window," she told a 911 dispatcher. "I just drove by and saw smoke barreling out of this house." She said a car was parked in the driveway but it appeared that no one was home.
Firefighters arrived within two to three minutes of receiving the call.
While the blaze was put down quickly, some damage to the two-story home in a quiet neighborhood cul-de-sac in the Hickory Woods subdivision near the Mason Early Childhood Center could be seen. Warren County Auditor's records show that the five-bedroom, 4,566 square foot home was owned by Michel Veillette and purchased in 2006 for $436,659.
The only damage to the home that could be seen from the street was an upstairs window at the center of the home that had been blackened from the fire damage. Firefighters from West Chester, Liberty Twp., Turtlecreek Twp., Deerfield Twp., Mason and South Lebanon helped put the fire out.

The very sad part is that this pathetic being is getting better treatment now and in the future (20 years for a death sentence) while in prison than those poor defenseless children where treated.

Now that some of the truth has been revealed, by the defendant, the cowardly murdering of his children by fire, DEMANDS his death!
As he is an engineer, the method of execution should reflect his engineering profession! Crucificion would work very well, him being nailed to the wood with his ankles nailed from the sides, the entire cross system would systematically bounce upon a rotating cam action reflecting in length the age of his children he murdered.

I think one was going to die no matter what. He was just stronger, If she never pulled the knife they would all be alive and be in divorce court instead. He has been honest about killing his wife, but the children he went to get and the smoke got to hot for him. When the fire department arrived he told them the children were inside. He also said in the fight he was leaving and taking them with him. God will take care of the children he knows they did no wrong.

Dear Anon, That’s the news/reporters for you that we have today. No one bothers checking facts first (or bad spelling for that matter.) All they care about are being the “first” to break a story or an update regardless of how accurate/factual it is. Dear Man Tried, you will never convince me the deaths of those precious children were an accident. It was as intentional as if someone had just put a gun to their little heads and pulled the trigger.

Shame on some of you. You have no idea how it feels to have someone work so hard to make a dream work. Not all dreams come true give the man a chance he tried. What if she was the one that lived and not him in the fight. Then how would you have felt??? She stood by him until she found a $200 charge you and no one else knows who it or was for it could have been for her for valentines day or her birthday you have no clue. The children were an accident. Accidents do happen.

Wish the news&/reporters would take time to get all the facts straight - on last night’s TV news Channel 12, the credit card charge was stated as $2000 (two thousand dollars) and they said the wife was found in the driveway with a knife still in her. The attached Journal article said the credit card charge was $200 (two hundred dollars) and the wife was found inside the house. Add this to the kid’s wrong ages & misspellings of the kid’s names, etc. Get the story straight!

I saw his picture on tv. He is a middle aged balding man who looks like a pube. I bet he was in mid life crisis. I also saw their home. 436,000? Wow! I wouldn’t have paid over 250k for that home. I guess the little nerd was trying to prove that he was a big shot. There are other ways to do that then buying homes that aren’t worth their price and cheating on your wife. What a loser.

I hope that they fry this idiot. He is a piece of trash. It would have been nice if he would have just killed himself that morning when he woke up. The only people who died were those who weren’t doing anything wrong. I hope that the state helps him die. Apparently he could not stay inside with the children and burn, so maybe now he will get lethally injected.

and until that person is revealed, society needs to stand together and demand tougher consequences for anyone who intentionally takes a child’s life! If (whomever) the person responsible spends the rest of their lives behind bars, regardless of what other inmates may or may not do to them, they still get to live and be fully supported by our tax dollars. Anyone who intentionally murders an innocent child needs to be PUT TO DEATH!

Billis, unfortunately your comments are ignorant also. At this point (READ MY WORDS) it DOES NOT matter who did it! That will come out! What matters here is four innocent children were murdered! Our laws must be changed so that ANYONE who intentionally murders an innocent child needs to be PUT TO DEATH without any chance of plea bargaining or appeal! With today’s technology, the person responsible for these children’s death will be revealed (cont.)

If he did do it I hope that he does not get the death penalty. He needs to endure a lifetime of butt rapings from bubba and prison beatings. This would be far worse for him. Especially when the inmates find out that he murdered his little children. He will be on full time punishment. I say let the justice system take its course. Then whoever did this will get the life that they asked for.

This Vile thing ,being held in jail,is not human or atleast not a man. He killed his wife, not with one stab wound but many. Then to hide his sin and crime ,he doused his home with chemicals in order to make it burn faster. Not being a man,he left his sleeping babies in their beds to die a horrible death. When the flames nipped at his heels he jumped out of the window to save himself. Tell me how much bravery did it take? Why wasn’t his skin Blistered and burned like that of his beautiful children

I have known both of the Veillette’s for about 10 years. We travelled together for our jobs and find this impossible to believe. I remember when Margaret was just learning to walk and her parents both adored her as he did all of his children. WE need to let the justice system run it’s course before we condemn a man for something he may not have done. I for one am going to find out if there is anything he needs or anything I can do to help him.

This comment is in regards to turning a tragedy into a political issue. The Warren Co. Commissionerss were the one’s who turned this into a political issue by ignoring the law and ordering the flags half-staff. Let’s see if they can do the right thing by going after the $400,000 domestic violence grant I read about in the newspaper last week. My guess is that it’s easy to lower a flag, for political appeal. Will they be as interested in protecting victims?

i have been deeply effected by this tragedy. i read your comments—with hopes to hear the intelligent words of the good people in our community. instead i hear that abortion, and divorce are to blame. shame on those that turn the tragic deaths of four children and their mother into a political issue. you probably sleep better at night with your justifications. perhaps you should run for president—(god will help you win!)…instead i will pray for the family and our community.

Whatever may have occurred within the walls of the Veilette home on the evening of this tragedy, we do not know. We do however know that the seed of evil lurks within the hearts of every one of us. This is the fallen human condition at its worst. There are obviously 2 separate issues here. One is a crime committed against the laws of men to be dealt with by the system of justice that we, as a nation, have developed. The second issue is one of morality and sin, to be judged only by God -

My question is “If this man was so seriously hurt that he had to be placed in critical condition, how on earth would they have been able to question him?”I turned on the 11pm news and the first thing I heard was “Breaking NEWS Michel Veillette had killed his family in Mason” I instantly thought how do they know that,it happened at 10pm. I agree that we should not judge until all facts are provided. Don’t we live in a society that we are granted the right that we are innocent until proven guilty

This case, just like all the other ones when kids are murdered by their parents sickens me. What is happening? I can’t help but think there is a correlation between these killings and the legalization of abortion. It’s like we no longer value life and our kids are disposable. This may be simplistic, but I can’t recall ever hearing about these kinds of crimes before Roe vs Wade. Think about it.

It really doesn’t mean a thing that this guy may have a reason for killing his family, pressure, divorce, whatever. At some point, he decided to set fire to the house and the coward left his family to die. I really could care less what happens to him, live or die. My son was a friend of his daughter and I can’t stop the pain he feels. There is never an excuse to kill, unless physically threaten.

Roger’s theory makes more sense than people are giving him credit for. There is absolutely NO excuse for this crime but the unfair/corrupt divorce laws appear to be putting men over the edge. It may not be the case here, but we all know it has played a role in many other crimes. If the current divorce laws favoring women are made more fair, there would be fewer situations like this in the news.

Every time I read another update about this tragedy, I make sure I hug my 2-year old a few extra times in addition to the hundred or so hugs I try to get in every day. I can’t imagine losing him in any way, let alone at the hands of the person who helped create him. Unbelievable. Let’s not forget the Duke Lacrosse players. We should not judge based on the scant information released so far. While I have raised the question of divorce, it in no way clouds my knowdlege that if he is found guitly of a crime, that he will be appropiately punished. Misandry is also a terible crime just like misogoly and the post here show a strong misandry. Also we need the courts and others to stop treating childrne like property and treat them as people.

This is why America needs Jesus. We have sold ourselves to things we do not need and this is the outcome. Money is ok, but being a slave to it, or even worshipping it is very bad. We need to turn our hearts back to Jesus and this stuff will stop. I am a product of prayer being taken out of schools. I have watched the effect and this is it. Violence in schools and homes (families) has flourished since this happened. It is amazing what large effects such a small decision can have.

It is very sad that the children are the ones who must pay with their lives for something the adults can’t seem to handle what is going on in their lives. Question why is the mother listed under her maiden name and not married? Just another question perhaps the mother did this and the husband was fighting her off and she ended up getting killed. Please accept my apologies, but the majority of you are not getting it. Roger, it is not up to a “good reporter” to discover if someone is having marital problems, quite frankly that is none of our business (it will be a jury’s business, but not the common person reading the paper.) SOMETHING has to be done to STOP the violence and I vote for execution when a child is intentionally murdered - no exceptions!

Yes and in all of these cases divorce was a part of them, but seldom mentioned when the news broke. A good reporter/news orginization would check to see if a man who was kind and loving in a 160K house, to a quiet withdrawn man in a 400+K house was recently threatened with divorce. The corrupt child support calculation, where the recieving person does not have to report or pay taxes on the income, nor account for how the money is spent is enough to push one over the edge. The new debtors prison

When he lived in a $160,000 home he was outgoing, caring and would do anything to take care of his family. In a $436,000 home he’s cold, standoffish and spends little time with his family. I guess class envy even works in selling newspapers.

First off for those of you screaming Jesus…. Jesus or lack of had nothing to do with this. What we need in this country if for the liberals to back off about human rights and start doing something concrete about crime in this country. I say bring back public hangings and let the criminals see what will happen to them. As for this gentleman, IF he did it I say let him be the first one hung.

Just remember when you read a story or hear it in the press before a trial, hearing or anything, you will not get all of the facts. During an investigation the police will NOT release everything. Just wait till things are brought out, then everyone can make a judgement or form an opinion. Either way, I am praying for the family and this father, husband. I hope that if he did do this, it will come out into the open and all things will be revealed.

To Carol: Check your facts. The man who threw four children off of a bridge was Vietnamese, not Chinese. Not that it matters to the victims or their surviving family members, but sheesh, do a little fact checking for Pete’s sake.

I don’t get it … I haven’t seen any reports of concrete evidence that this man is the one who killed his family. Other people’s opinions about his character - we all know that can be flawed or skewed (the good reports or the bad reports). People are looking to put his head on a spike, but no one knows any of the facts yet. Once it’s investigated, and there is concrete evidence that shows he did it and wasn’t an escaped victim, then people can judge HIM.

Please stop judging. The facts need to be investigated before any more speculation on giving the death penalty, frying someone or whatever.

Was it a vicious murder from a stranger? Coincidence the wife’s family name was Ferrari and he designed cars? Maybe he wanted insurance money or someone else did or did he maybe think there was no way out? OR the couple only saw each other one wknd a month, is it possible he met someone else and wanted a new life? OR could she have met someone and he found out about it OR was he bribed or threatened? or did he hire a hitman and then change his mind and try to stop it only to fail? Your thoughts?

Cry out to Jesus. Togather if we repent we can turn this nation back to God. He truly is close to the broken hearted. It is time that we repent and come back home. It is never too late and He will always hear you no matter what you have done. He died for our sins so that we can be free. All we have to do is accept Him as Lord.

It is really sad what Ohio is turning into. This used to be the kind of stuff that you heard about in California. Now it is here in Ohio. I agree with Billis. We need to change our hearts. It is not about the money. We also need to quit competing with each other so much and learn to be happy. I am really sad that this has happened. It is truly a tragedy.

This is a good opportunity to state that America is chasing the wrong things. We have forgotten Jesus and chase after money. Have you seen all the stories coming out of Ohio? Microwaving babies, parents killing their children and their families? Something is wrong and it is not a problem the legal system can fix. Americans need help that comes from Jesus. This is the only way to fix the problems that have come in. Look at how the news has changes since prayer has been taken out of school.

All i have to say is that those babies did nothing to deserve to die. no human has any right to kill a person or thing. my heart goes out to the family and friends of these angels and their mommy. i just lost my parents within 8weeks of each other i can could not imagine going through someting like this. If this man did do this he will pay for it believe me. he will think about it everyday that he is alive. rest in peace little angels your mommy to.

My family and myself are originally from Middletown, Ohio. All of us we born and raised there. I would never believe such an horrible crime could be done in such a beautiful peaceful town. In to 50’s, and 60’s such a crime would never happen. The worst thing was the town drunk. This man needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. A person who hurts children is NO MAN!!

I was a former neighbor to the family for 6 years. Shock.. that is the only word. Michel would not harm a fly let alone his own blood. If you knew him, and his family, they were amazing. I sympathize and mourn with both families on such a loss. My prayers go out to Nadya, and the children. My family will miss you five dearly. God Bless…

There is so much news media anymore, no wonder there is all this tragedy going on! I pray for their souls. Innocent children will sit at the right sid of the father, but the murderer will be in eternal hell! People like Scott Peterson and the lady who drowned her 5 children opened the flood gates, for these deminted people to do what they do! There was an aricle on Sunday where a Chinese father of 4 threw them off a bridge because he had an argument with his wife! How sick!

Quite frankly, I don’t care WHO did it. I just pray WHO did it is put to death as quickly as possible with NO plea bargans, NO insanity pleas, and NO possibility of appeals. Some may say “let them sit in jail,” but the ones who say that need to realize as long as our system keeps allowing persons who INTENTIONALLY kill innocent children to make a plea bargans, murderers will just keep on killing! May God be with both families.

Why wouldn’t you think that someone had it out for the father due to a business deal gone bad and broke in and killed the family? Why is it always blamed on the surviving member.
The media tells you what to think. Everyone should think for your self about these situations. Would you want someone to judge you like you have done with him?

I don’t know WHO did this to these beautiful children and their mother BUT if it was their father….I feel sorry for him! I can not even begin to understand WHY anyone would hurt or kill their kids or anyone, There is NO-WAY it could be that bad!! If you do do something like this then you OBviously need help! God help him is all I can say IF he did do it!

May GOD(every God) be with these innocent children and family members forever.
It is sad to see more and more families turning to such violence. My thought is that possibly financial issues could turn a seemingly perfect family upside down overnight. The stock market has been down alot this year, the housing problem, and the slowing economy. I live in Mason and I remember several years ago a young man committed suicide after losing his job.

Murder, tragedy, is so easy to read, and want to know the details, until you know the people.
If you could see beyond this tragedy, you would know that there is a birthday cake, waiting for an angel.
You would know that one of these beautiful babies was a vibrant loving child, that loved webkinz, and was to be a model.
if you knew, them you would know the twins were angels, that they would melt your heart to look into their eyes, it hurts to terribly to read…my friends are in heaven.

The “Journal News” is not going to insist that we should know all the tragic details of what happened to this family, are you? Oops, I spoke too soon, you’ve already started with details of the mother’s death at 8:06 tonight. Stay tuned, news at 11:00.
I realize the horrendous times in which we live demand that no detail not be described in minute description, and that the “people have the right to know”, but please, why not allow surviving members of this family grieve.

Paul, there was an accelerant used, that part has already been disclosed by the fire marshal and recent updates on the news indicate a domestic disturbance. I don’t know if the husband is guilty or not but I haven’t seen charges be leveled so quickly without significant reason. It will play out, we just have to watch and wait.

It saddens me to read the comments on this story. If these comments are a valid litmus of society, what a judgmental society we really are. He’s the only one that lived so he must be guilty? Wow, if that’s the way it is, I hope I die in any future tragedy that may occur!
Seriously, if both of them had knife wounds, perhaps they got into an argument and knocked over a candle? Perhaps it caught the curtains on fire? We don’t know the facts yet, so stop jumping to conclusions!

I don’t see the rush to judgement. This isn’t ‘a person of interest’, this isn’t a ‘suspect’, he isn’t a ‘focus of investigation’. The charges are not being disputed in any news or by the authorities on the scene. There will be a statement soon for the press about the details but I see no reason at this point to question the professionalism or decisions of the authorities in this case.

Can’t honestly say about the guilt or inocence of the father as all the facts have not been collected, analized, nor presented by the authorities. I can only deal with the hard evidence presented and NOT the sensationalism displayed by the media, the rumors or the “hear say” of other parties. We all need to remember that before we are in the position to deny any individual in these United States of America from their freedoms, we need to have all the facts, the evidence and the proof!

There is no way forensics would have the results so fast so charges so quickly usually stem from written or verbal confessions. When working a crime scene with unknown assailants, it is worked the same was as with a confession/known attacker but results still take weeks. Doesn’t sound like there is a mistake in the arrest. The only very certain aspect is how tragic the loss of life is and how horrible that children and their own mother died.

It does not surprise me that people have in their minds that the husband killed his family. Please keep in mind people that this is the news media. They do not know what happened, all they do is report the news and try to summarize things up. For all we know there could have been an intruder within the house… these are my thoughts and I give them freely.

The police have charged him. They can look at stab wounds and tell if it was inflicted by someone else or by him. The police I’m sure have looked at everything or they wouldn’t of charged the freak. I don’t care how nice he is or that we should show compassion to him. He doesn’t deserve compassion. He killed his wife and 4 children. I say put him in prison with the other inmates and let them take care of him. Men in jail don’t like men who hurt children. That will be hell on earth for him

Wow, people are so judgemental. When this man awakes, there will be a story. Imagine how he may feel. If he did do this, the law will punish him. If he didn’t do this, look at what you have said. Shame on you. We have a judicial system for a reason. Please speak your opinion, it is your Constitutional right, but be careful of passing judgement. This week our country has lost so many innocent lives, maybe you should all take a moment to stop judging others and just pray for justice and love.
