Morris Furniture goes green to cut costs

Morris Furniture Co., Inc., expects to save thousands of dollars in operating costs by reducing store hours and pursuing green initiatives, said the company's president Larry Klaben.
Morris Furniture Co., Inc., reduced its weekday operation by one hour per day, opening at 11 a.m. instead of 10. The reduction in hours is economical on the staffing side.
"By opening an hour later, we don't have to have our staff come in as early and it'll reduce the number of longer shifts," said spokesperson George Hartley.
Morris Home Furnishings in Dayton and Ashley Furniture HomeStores in Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky now open an hour later Monday through Friday. Cutting back five hours of operation per week will be a 7 percent reduction in electricity and HVAC usage, Klaben said.
Other efforts Morris Furniture Co. has taken to reduce its carbon footprint include putting diesel engines in delivery vehicles and recycling packing waste and other material in the warehouse, said Klaben, in a press release.
"Over all of our stores, by changing light bulbs, changing hours, it's in the tens of thousands of dollars (saved)," Klaben said.
