MIDDLETOWN — Middletown Lyric Theatre’s 2009-10 season includes everything from a Christmas show to a tribute to the movies of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland.

The theater will first present “Godspell,” a production of the theater’s summer drama club for youth in sixth through 12th grades. That show — one of the earliest works of Stephen Schwartz, who created the Broadway hit “Wicked,” will play July 15-17.

“Honk,” playing Sept. 24-27, is a musical that is a twist on the Ugly Duckling story. It won the 200 Olivier Award, the British equivalent of the Tony.

“A Night at the Theatre,” playing Nov. 5-8, takes the unusual tack of telling a story from an audience’s point of view. The show is a comedy about a group of people trying to watch Shakespeare’s’ “Hamlet,” none too successfully.

“I Need A Little Christmas Vacation”/”I’ll Be Home for Christmas” is a yuletide doubleheader playing Dec. 11-13. In the first show, kids fear being snowed in at school on the last day before Christmas vacation. The second half features local performer William “Kip” Moore and friends singing several Christmas classics.

“Fat Pig,” to be staged Jan. 15 and 16, details the troubles of Tom when he falls for Helen, a bright woman who happens to be very plus-sized.

“Ruthless: The Musical,” playing Feb. 11-14, tells the story of a girl who will go to any lengths to play Pippi Longstocking in her high school musical — including murdering the leading lady.

April 8-11 brings “The Dixie Swim Club,” about five southern women swapping stories as they meet every August at a cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

“Babes in Hollywood,” on stage May 13-16, covers the movie musicals made by the “let’s put on a show” team of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. Songs include “Over the Rainbow,” “You Made me Love You,” “Easter Parade” and more.

Charley Shafor, the artistic director of the theater, said his goal was to get more new people involved and to offer a wide variety of shows.

“The past season was incredibly successful. We got new people involved and every show was well received by audiences,” he said.
