Folks weren’t afraid to go dancing in the streets as the third annual Broad Street Bash kicked off Wednesday, May 20, at Middletown’s Governors Square Park.

Parents were especially happy to have a local entertainment alternative for their little ones.

“The kids were having a blast,” said Tim James, who moved here from Tennessee in February.

He took his daughters and fiancee to the season’s first block party and enjoyed some grub at the Jug burger stand. Later, they and other families enjoyed the 1980s band Whammies.

An inflatable moon bounce, miniature golf and cornhole gave children plenty to do while grown-ups jammed.

“It’ll probably help this economy around here,” James said of the event.

Admission is free to the Broad Street Bash, held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. every other Wednesday at Governors Square Park at Central Avenue and Broad Street.

For the past two years, Billy Lambert, 35, and his sister, Leighann Lambert, 29, have turned the event into a family outing.

“You know summer’s started when the Bash is here,” said Leighann Lambert. “It’s something to do.”

The next event, June 3, will feature the band DixZ Highway.

The Broad Street Bash lineup

June: 3: DixZ Highway, a Fairfield based country-rock band.

June 17: After Midnight, specializing in '70s classic rock.

July 1: The Menus, who drew the Bash’s record-high audience, return for more classic rock and zany stage antics.

July 15: Stagger Lee, a mainstay among local country/rock bands.

July 29: The Websters, a rock pop/punk band from Cincinnati.

Aug. 12: The Cleavers, a classic-rock group.
