CINCINNATI— The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s music director, Paavo Järvi has decided to end his 10-year tenure as the Orchestra’s twelfth Music Director at the end of the 2010-2011 season, when his current contract expires, the orchestra announced Thursday, Jan. 7.
Järvi’s final concerts as CSO Music Director will be in May of 2011.
“Conducting this great orchestra in Cincinnati has been the most rewarding and fulfilling experience of my career,” said Järvi. “This also marks my longest tenure and for good reason – I love this orchestra. The CSO is playing better than ever and I’m looking forward to my tenth season making music with these incredible musicians and performing for our fantastic Cincinnati audiences. I feel that after a decade on this podium, it will be time to pass the baton to Cincinnati’s next music director, but will always cherish my years here and look forward to collaborations with the CSO beyond my music directorship. I’m also excited to see how this dynamic, world-class ensemble will continue to grow and thrive.”
Born in Tallinn, Estonia, Järvi studied percussion and conducting at the Tallinn School of Music then, in 1980, moved to the United States where he continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music with among others, former CSO Music Director Max Rudolf, and at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute with Leonard Bernstein. He became Music Director of the CSO in September of 2001.
Järvi will continue to serve as Music Director for the CSO through the end of the 2010-2011 season, and the details of his tenth anniversary season will be announced in the coming days..
“We look forward to both celebrating Maestro Järvi’s tremendous achievements over the past decade as CSO Music Director and also undergoing an extensive search for the CSO’s next artistic leader, which will start soon,” said CSO President Trey Devey.
