LIBERTY TWP. — It’s been about a month since Bruno’s Pizza opened inside the Elks Lodge in Liberty Twp. yet, there’s still confusion about who can eat there.

“People think you need to belong to the Elks to eat here, but we are open to the public and we want to make that known so our business will pick up,” said General Manager Noah Miller.

The restaurant has a sports bar theme and features homemade pizza dough that’s rolled out fresh and is then hand tossed and covered with homemade sauce, fresh toppings and provolone cheese.

The pizza is then baked in a gas oven as opposed to the convection style used by many of the larger chains.

“We use a conventional gas oven to bake our pizza simply because it makes them taste better,” said owner Karen McClellan.

One thing I really liked was the number of toppings there were to choose from, and I especially appreciated the option of green olives since most pizzerias only offer black. I also liked that Bruno’s will let you order pizza by the slice, and for $4.99 I enjoyed two large slices topped with green and banana peppers, green olives and mushrooms with a Coke. If you opt for cheese, you can get this daily lunch special for $3.99 (toppings are 25 cents) and you’re reasonably full when you leave.

In addition to pizza, there are salads, pastas, sub sandwiches, Italian-style dinners and typical bar fare. Bruno’s also offers a special appetizer known as Bruno Dough, that’s cut fresh, deep fried and topped with garlic butter and dipped in marinara sauce. The dessert version is deep fried and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and frosting is served on the side for dipping. A kid’s menu for those younger than 12, features chicken tenders, spaghetti, boneless wings and fries.

Bruno’s offers delivery within a five-mile area with a $1.50 delivery charge. A separate banquet room seats 250 and is suitable for wedding receptions, corporate meetings and special events. Reservations are recommended for large groups on weekends and there are a variety of drink specials at the full service bar, including a weekday happy hour and discounted buckets of beer.
