Michael Richards, aka Kramer, spews racial slurs during standup
Monday, November 20, 2006
LOS ANGELES — Michael Richards stunned a comedy club audience, shouting racial epithets at people who heckled him during a stand-up routine.
Extras
The 57-year-old actor-comedian, best known for playing Jerry Seinfeld's eccentric neighbor Kramer on the hit TV show "Seinfeld," was performing at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood Friday night when he launched into the verbal rampage, according to video posted on TMZ.com.
The tirade apparently began after two black audience members started shouting at him that he wasn't funny.
Richards retorted: "Shut up! Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a f——— fork up your a—."
He then paced across the stage taunting the men for interrupting his show, peppering his speech with racial slurs and profanities.
While there is some audible chuckling in the audience throughout the outburst, someone can be heard gasping "Oh my God" and various people "0oh" after Richard uses the n-word.
Richards performed the next night at the Laugh Factory without incident.
Calls to Richards' representatives were not immediately returned early Monday.
He refused to comment on-camera when reached by CNN, but the network reported that he said off-camera he felt sorry for what had happened and had made amends.

wishing to thank kelley (MR?KELLY?) and rodney for proving my point. actually, i quite wished they hadn’t. how they interact with one another on such a juvenile level only shows what i believe every u.s. citizen must confront; american society has regressed to such a degree very few countries around the world (including the mid-east) can look up to it as being the standard modal of a progressive, 21st century society. is america just a good idea that has gone horribly awry? i should hope not!¡!¡

To Mr. KELLY, I’m black and know for a fact that most black people are racist, and refuse to admit it, claiming that only whites are racist. Your comment about all whites being racist is ubsurd and ignorant. Fact is, I don’t think any of the white people I have grown up with had anything to do with slavery or stealing land from the indians. that happened hundreds of years ago. Get over it, and get on with your life Dummie!

“Why is Dave Chappelle excused when he uses racial slurs regularly on his TV SHOW?”
Dave uses racial slurs through comedy to prove a point. Such as the Niggar family sketch. A white family whose last name is Niggar. Dave takes all the generalizations about black people made by society and points them back at the white family because their last name is Niggar. (Genius stuff) “You Niggars are sure lazy” You’re comparing apples and oranges.

Being from Canada, I sadly point out how horrendously messed up Americans really are, be they white, black, yellow, or brown. I am appauled as a human being at how ignorance is celebrated and ineptitude rewarded. PERSONAL AWARENESS AND RESPECTING YOURSELF/OTHERS. it’s what modern man calls a functioning and healthy SOCIETY. Generaly, i see American society as a gigantic sandboxed playground; finger pointing reasoning in place of individual accountability. Sad to see such promise go to pot.

Please people, as if the same words can’t have different meanings. The “N” word coming from a white person is totally different than coming from a black person.
Why are white people so mad they can’t use that word without getting a beat down?

Would kramer have done this on a sienfeld episode..? i think he may have done something paroding this craziness..it would have been even funny (on Sienfeld) if it had been about some culture who doesnt now exist ..I think this whole thing may have been planned to some extent to bring back “kramer” and put richards in the spotlight..I mean we ARE talking about him again right? To 19-YR- black male college student and all against J. Jackson, while I don’t agree with everything Mr. Jackson does, I have respect for him because he has struggled and is part of the civil rights movement with Dr. King, Rosa Parks, Reverand Abernathy, Ambassador Young, etc. etc. For those who don’t remember, not old enough to remember, not born, etc., J.J. was with Dr. King when Dr. King was shot. Viewed MR’s video & undecided whether comments were those of a racist or insensitive comedian.

Michael Richards comments were horrendous, I think we can all agree on that. The problem that I see, is that African Americans are constantly saying that the N word is offensive. However, that is basically the content of most rap songs and black comedy.
Bottom line, practice what you preach. If you don’t want it used by others, then let’s not use at all. Whether in rap or comedy. End of story.

Let me start off by saying I dont agree with the comments made by Mr Richards by any means. But here is my problem, Ive read almost every somment here and what bugs me the most is the hypacritical statements made on here by a number of black people who say they were offended and hurt about the situation. There was only one young black college female that made a an educated comment and it said she wasnt really hurt by his comments because the term “n****r” is used so widely in showbusinessbyblacs

Michael is a Veteran and they tend to have anger management problems. We met two years ago at the West Los Angeles V.A. Hospital when he stopped by to lend his support of the human portrait that we were attempting. If he wants to really address his problems with anger he can come to U.S. VETS and attend our Anger management classes with the other vets that are housed here. In our facility there are 60% black Veterans and we do not tolerate prejudice in any way.

Jesse Jackson can’t possibly be the voice of blacks in America when he really doesnt live the struggle on a daily basis. How he feels should be ignored at all times. Kramer shouldnt apologize. It wont clear his reputation OR cure his terrible stand up act. Why is Dave Chappelle excused when he uses racial slurs regularly on his TV SHOW? I was offended by Richard’s remarks BUT I’m tired of looking to my blackness for justice. It’s an excuse for mediocrity. Equality will never arrive in America!!

No matter how you slice it, Richard’s f’d up. Most of the posts I’ve read on here are similar to how he apparently feels. Half of the Caucasian posters on here are making sly racist comments. It’s strange to me, “White America” already has it pretty easy. If you think being Black isn’t hard, try it for a week. You’ll understand what we as a people are sensitive about. Cops don’t hassle Whites, they target Blacks, they even admit to doing so. Walk a mile in my shoes & think before you post.

Michael Richards is an idiot. He’s obviously not that much different from the character he played on TV, who was a bumbling fool, except he’s more hateful. He needs to get himself together and go get a real job, because obviously he can’t handle being a stand-up comic. Nobody will want to watch him from now on.

First of all, why is all the negativity concerning the so called hecklers? Michael Richards was not heckled. The MIXED group of men came into the club late. They were celebrating a friend’s birthday. Michael Richards did not like the destraction. He made comments specifically to the black men. He is a RACIST and IGNORANT. I do not believe that he is truly sorry. Thank again, he is SORRY!! … this is who we are, confused and ready to fight because of it. It’s a club. I believe I feel Mr. Richards embarrassment as I do mine when weakened expression of retort results in obscenity. Though! As an elite’ member of this group I am digraced that one of us would fondly recall his boy-hood “The Days of the Original PIC-NIC”, where one people ate another people. Words like that come steeped from the heart, and causes division when racism becomes One Peoples Hammer and One Peoples Shield

Richards should not feel at all bad about what he said, would the hecklers have liked it if Richards had started commenting on how bad they did their jobs while they were slinging crack or stealing cars. I dont think so. If you cant stand the heat stay out of the fire, a comedian doesnt seem like the type of person i would want to start a verbal argument with. More people need to say what they think and feel instead of dance around the issue. If we all spoke our minds the world would be bett

As an educated black woman, I know the difference between blacks and “niggers”. A black person is a respecatble, law abiding, tax paying person of color who wants to live free and contribute to society. A n****r is one of the more than 50% of black men who are incarcerated, the more than 50% of our women who bare multiple children out of wedlock, the NBA palyers who go into the stands to confront fans, Jesse and other trouble-seeking leaders who prey on the productive in the name of race, etc.

I dont know what is more pothetic, Michael Richards spewing racist remarks or a couple of black people using their race to fill their bank accounts because they got their feelings hurt. The Constitution says we have a right to free speech, not watch what we say. Although Michael Richards may have crossed the line, no one has the right to silence his voice or pass judgement on him, he was simply expressing his first amendment right. The owner of the laugh factory is banning the use of the word n****r in his club over this incident. I just wonder if he knows he is in violation of a persons first amendment rights or does he not care about individual freedom.

I am black female who has never seen an episode of Seinfeld. I despise the “n” word. I feel sorry for anyone who allows themselves to get that angry. Mr Richards is a human being first and two wrongs never make any situation right. I believe that we are put in different siuations for different reasons. Mr Richards needs a lesson in tolerance or to know that people that have a microphone (white or black)& have the platform must to be mindful and respectful of others. Hecklers will always be there

As a black woman I don’t think its right to call a person any name, white or black. But you still can’t compare “cracker” with the “N” word. There is a history of slavery, rape, lynching, murder, inequality & hate that accompanies that word. No matter who uses the word, the root of it is to make black people feel ignorant, ugly and less than human. Richards didn’t use the words or hateful incidents as jokes, he used them to say that no matter how bad he sucked at least he wasn’t born black.

As a comedian I would think that heckling would be the first thing that you have to learn to overcome.Someone who has as many years in the industry as Michael Richards would know this.I don’t think he’s sorry in the least,he’s only apologizing because of the backlash. If no one had said shame on you he would have supported his statements 100%.I’m a lover of the show Seinfeld, but lets be honest it wasn’t made up of the most diverse cast. So,I’m not that surprised that Mr. Richards lacks sensitivity

Richards is a lousy stand up commedian. He is not funny. Stand up commedy is the most difficult form of acting. Richards doesn’t have it. The fact that he is a failure as a stand up commedian (imagine an unfunny Jew) and having it pointed out to him by a pack of negroes was simply too much for his Jew psyche to handle. He made a last ditch effort to be funny by calling the hecklers niggers. Maybe he thinks he’s the new Lenny Bruce. Even his joke about the fork wasn’t funny.

Jesse Jackson needs to get a life - does he have to put his nose into everything? If he constantly wants to be the voice of the African -American community then I certainly feel bad for them. He is a pathetic whiney holier than thou man who uses other people as pawns so he can get on TV and rant about how unfair, and racist America is - Its completely hypocritical considering the fact that if America was overwhelming racist he wouldn’t be able to say those things on network televsion.

You people are out of your f…in mind!! It’s not because he used the N word that has me upset but the fact he made a definite lynching relationship. Number 2 is that the 2 N words in question were with a group of mixed people of blacks, whites and hispanics. Why did ” Cosmo Kramer’s ” anger not spill out to anyone else in that group if he is not racist. He is a punk a*s racist who needs his a*s kicked and he should stay with acting because he is a terrible stand up.

The whites used as an insult but I am proud of my ancestors who lived and died with the name. The sacrifices they made to help ALL blacks get to where we are today. The guys in the audience who heckled him behaved just as badly. But Richards really lost his head - he should have handled himself better. Most performers have had experiences with hecklers and usually don’t react so badly. Also, the club management could have asked them to leave. It’s a shame Richards resorted to using racial slurs; it’s not the color of their skin that made them rude. It’s their lack of character.

Why does it always have to come down to the color of a person’s skin? We are all guilty. The white person who was robbed by a black man and now thinks all black people steal, NOT. The black person that was called N****r by a white person in the street and now thinks all white people are bigots, NOT. Instead of going on what we “think” we know about each other why not try to get to know each other and judge based on who we are and not what race we belong to. JESUS LOVES ALL SKIN NOT AN ISSUE

What Mr. Richards did was shocking, of this there can be no arguement. What the the heckelers did was equally shocking, and cannot be tollerated. What I have seen on this form however is the most shocking of all. There are racist comments on both sides which are much more damming than anything he said, and that truely terifies me. Richards has not ruined his career. We (Blacks) are a forgiving people. In matter of fact, too forgiving. The topic is hot now and will linger; it will not be forgotten, but his comments will be forgiven. His comments were wrong and exposed his deep rooted feelings. But let’s be honest, we all has some prejudice and racial issues. We try to suppress them as much as possible and most of us do it very well. However, if we are pushed to our limit verbally or physically we will protect ourselves.

It’s unbelievable that a JEWISH person (like Michael Richards)would harbor racial hatred. Aren’t Jews the ones walking around asking people not to forget the Hollocaust. Has Michael Richard forgotten that 70 years ago the Germans put every Jew that they could find in an oven for reason of genocide. Why didn’t he make reference to that event? It just goes to show how some Jewish people will deny their own history of oppression in order to try to assimulate with the majority to try to make money

Read Mr. Richards is going to seek psychological counseling for anger management and determine why he made the horrendous comments. Mr. Richards went too far ……. I’m sure he has encountered hecklers before. However, what he said is shared by many. Racism/segregation continues to be a nefarious condition in this country and there are those who would prefer things the way they were 50 years ago. On the flip side, it’s gratifying to know there are many who do not share Mr. Richards’ views.

From B.E.T - to United Negro College - to slavery - Africian Americans have used the excuses time after time. Get a job, and get fired its because they are black. Say something to them or about them in a negitive manner its because they are black. Why they cannot do well in society.. its because of slavery and they are black. GET OVER IT. How many more years of the SAME excuses? Now recently a white man put together a “White” scholarship for 250.00.. You would think the devil came to town.

He only responded to racial slurs by the ignorant audience members. Once again, the media showed only the one side of the story. The general public would have been shocked to see what transpired prior to the Police Officers striking Rodney King. He had it coming, just like the audience members at the comedy club. I’m a little tired of it being ‘racial’ when it comes from a white persons mouth.

I (an African American) was troubled by the comments but then again, I have to say that the audience members who heckled him were wrong too…they make us regular black folks with “home training” look bad…I kinda thought they did it on purpose. Obviously, they were inconsiderate too to the other people in the audience who were paying customers. What happened to plain courtesy on both parts? This whole situation is bullst. Richards was offended by the rude audience members and he got angry. He lost his temper and called those two audience members what they were. There is a difference between black people and n*ers, just like there is a difference between white people and trailer trash. If these two audience members would have had any class or had been brought up learning to respect others, then the outburst would have not been provoked.

What happened to common courtesy? If the two gentlemen did not appreciate Richard’s act, why not simply exit the building like people with class. No, they began yelling from the audience. This is tacky regardless of race! Why doesn’t the media provide us with those characters’ backgrounds? Let American judge them too.

I think it’s a bunch of B.S. that a comedian on stage can’t say a few things after being hassled. Just watch ANY Martin Lawrence film, or the Dave Chapelle Show, or hell, B.E.T, I mean come on, lords knows it there was a W.E.T white entertainment television, the world would have a F**in fit, and it pses me off. Now I’m not racist by any means, but open your eyes folks, look around and then think of who the hypacrites are, yes this is you Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, and all the others.

Obviously the ones who don’t see anything wrong with this did not have their culture and heritage under attack. If everyone should “get over this” as some of the posts suggest. I say get over OJ trying to make money by fabricating how he would have killed his white wife. Or get over Mel Gibson saying Jews are the cause of the world’s problems. Richards should be made an example of at least as extreme as hanging from a tree. After all isn’t that what we are talking about

Mr Richards does not speak for anyone except himself, it is because of people like this that I find myself being ashamed and embarassed at times that I am white.

He’s the deal. Michael Richards was wrong in saying what he said. And now the man wants an apology. But on the flip side of the coin, nobody said a thing when the man started calling Richards a “Cracka”, which is a basically a racist term towards white people. So is this showing to America that black people can be racists, but you cannot say anything racial to them? Two wrongs do not make a right. Yes, Richards should apologize. But so should the man in question for his racial outburst.

I can’t understand why everyone is not outraged by this. If Michael Richards had told a jewish person “shut up—-50 years ago you were in an furnace” would we still think it was comedy? I dare say not. Lynching and genocide are not comical topics. We all should be ashamed. I can’t believe Mr. Richards was allowed to do another show the next day. As for the N word, contrary to popular belief, it is not a part of every Black person’s vocabulary.

who care’s I guess it’s okay for Dave Chapple and other black comedians to use the the N word but when it comes to a white comedian it’s different. The N word is wrong white or black but when it’s funny and your laughing who cares “huh” but when the laughing stops. Then what? it’s not funny anymore. and iam a black man myself the sh?t will never end.

I am a black male, I have watched Seinfeld for years and really enjoyed it, especially the antics of “Kramer”. He is a comedian who makes a living off the observations of everyone, all races, like it or not. I have listened to just about every black comedian out there and white people observations are a big part of their acts and I actually am tired of it yet, if its funny I laugh. I rarely ever hear white comedians even attempt to make light of black life and when they do, better be careful.

know what? this is completly ridiculous. 1. if you dont want to be offended about something DONT go to a comedy show. 2. its completly dumb to assume he’s racist by what he said by that logic chris rock, michael richards, bill cosby and many many others are all terrible racist and should be silenced better yet why dont we just do away with the 1st amendment so that no one can say anything at all without getting a permit first down with humor down with free speech this thing sucks at sarcasm

I honestly don’t know what to say after reading these comments.I thought that we had come a lot further than this. That fact that ANYONE would find nothing wrong the statements made just makes me sick to my stomach.Further more, NOT ALL BLACK PEOPLE USE THE N-WORD!I for one do not use that word.It is moments in AMERICAN HISTORY,like the Civil Rights Movement, that allows me to not use this word.I have felt the blows of racism personally and I’m sick and tired of the comments like this being OK!

Who cares? I mean really, who cares? Chris Rock and Dave Chappel have made entire careers making fun of white people. No one is shouting that they are racists. The average black man uses the word “n****r” as a term of endearment, no one is calling him racist. I personnally think there is far too much focus on the color of a person’s skin. What, white people can’t use this word, why? Who cares that a white comedian stood his ground when confronted by two beligerent audience members?

racism is the dangerous thing that ever existed. worse than war. simply because you will never see it coming. i laugh at people who shows it,not realizing how stupid they are for jeapordizing theyre job, freedom, teeth, family and peace. people are so crazy these days they will hurt you for being that way. so why take that chance.im surprised he did not get bottles thrown at him. in miami that gets no play, we would have ran him out of there and got our money back. racism is setting precedent not color bashing. the only ones who can do it is white people. think about it! if you lost all your power because the very people you keep dumb watched you and realized you where saying one thing but doing another and used the same tactics toward you and you could not do anything about it due to the civil rights movement and acts. i think i will be mad as hell to for being so stupid. the secret is out dont get mad the POWERSHIFT is here. love god, live life.

By reading all these posted comments I am totaly convince that we all have a bit of rasiam in us. Furthermore, this country will never be cured of rasiam as long as their are people with hate in their hearts. The reason why we can’t all get along in this counry is because our oppressive racial descrimanative ancestral history wont allow it. Jesus is watching all of us, and we will be accountable for every word out of are mouth. Why not let him judge Mr Richards?

These comments about history of blacks.and going through hardships, you don’t need to be black to understand hardships-alot of other races went through racism, slavery, etc. Blacks shouldn’t be singled out.You constantly hear insults on whites, mexicans, chinese, and thats how alot of comedy shows. Ok.What Michael Richards did was very wrong. There is no justification for it…but ignorant people disturbing a show can really get under people’s skin and he should of kicked their butts out the club.

I LOVED IT. PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY WHAT EVER THEY WANT TO WHO EVER THEY WANT. AND ALL YOU WHO CALL HIM DISGUSTING SHOULD LOOK AT YOUR SELVES FIRST. HE CAN SAY WHAT EVER HE WANTS AND YOU DONT HAVE TO LISTEN STOP STOP CRYING ABOUT IT. WORST PART IS THAT BLACK COMEDIANS ARE 10 TIMES WORSE THAN THAT BUT NO ONE MAKES A FUSS OF THAT GARBAGE. SO STOP BEING HYPOCRITES AND START DEALING WITH REAL ISSUES INSTEAD OF CRYING ABOUT HIS WORDS. BOTTOM LINE IF YOU DONT LIKE IT THEN DON’T FRICKIN LISTEN.

I absoluetly loved it. People have the right to say what ever they want to who ever they want. If you don’t like what he said then don’t FRICKIN LISTEN. People in this country go nuts about stupid things instead of taking care of real issues. The worst part about it is that his stand up wasn’t nearly as racist as half the black comedians i have seen but no one goes crazy over that. For all those who call it disgusting i say YOU ARE ALL HYPOCRITS! Think before you prejudge people your disgusting

All this proves is that people are ignorant no matter what their “status” is. I mean look at some of the posts on here - blacks and whites alike are making it personal to them. Richard’s will be punished on his own because he won’t get a job (at least not a good one) ever again. I’m not mad at black people because OJ got away with murder - so why be mad at a racist idiot like Richards? Move on - don’t speak like an ignorant fool and everything will be cool.

M. Richards showed his true colors. Use of “N” word takes the backseat to the fork up the a-s comment. Sounds like white supremist talk to me ……no longer under the sheets!!!!!!!! Grossly unacceptable!!!!!

First of all the N word was not created by our ancestors it was given to us by the slave masters. The term shoul At the time of the Atlantic slave trade, n****r was a casual English language term for black people. The word later became associated with an overt contempt, a racist assumption of inherent black inferiority, making it extremely pejorative.

I’m black and “big N” is not part of my vocabulary and same goes for other racial slurs. However, MR’s use of “N” word did not bother me as his fork up the a-s comment. It’s racist, white supremist behavior. Statement is akin to telling a Jewish person, remember when Germany had you on a grill!!!! Sorry grossly unacceptable!!!!!!!

I’m not sayin he was right in what he did but I will say this much , had this been a black person using the N’ word, nobody would have even known about it unless they were there that night, and we all know it’s the truth. But because he used to be on a very popular show the world now knows. As far as what I read about Lauryn Hill what she said about white people buying her album (that she’d rather starve) Now thats a disgrace, and why was nothing said about that? I’ll tell ya why, shes black .

The fact that he lost his composure is akin to me flippin out in Iraq one day and shooting all the villagers. Despite how I feel about a race or peoples, I refuse to let it surface either out of frustration or anger. I always show love though. We all pay each others salaries, and when we do dumn sht, we fck up our money. Is he a racist? Yes. Does it matter? Not to me. I never watched Seinfeld or his comedy show. The word is meant to offend black people, first and foremost.

ya know, it is unfortunate this situation turned up as it did…. but i have to agree with several comments here, if the shoe was on the other foot, nothing would have been said…! —i’ll tell ya what should have happened…if the blacks did not like the comedian, they should have left…bottom line!!………and if the comedian is getting heckled, then deal with it…thats the chance you take as a comedian!!! PEOPLE GROW UP !!!! We are all GOD’s children!!
