(Hopefully) the last Trotwood post
COLUMBUS — Earlier today, I was standing with some people near the boys high jump when Dan Ross, the Ohio High School Athletic Association commissioner, walked up. We exchanged pleasantries, then someone brought up the elephant in the infield.
“We promise not to ask any questions about Trotwood,” the reporter said.
It’s been an issue for Ross in the past few weeks, especially as stud sprinter Michael Shaw was ruled ineligible and went through a court battle to try to run in the state tournament. Shaw lost, but the inspired Trotwood team still has a strong showing today in Columbus.
The 800-meter relay team, for instance, burned to a top qualifying time of 1:26.10 with more relays and field events to come. Once thought a shoe-in for a Division I state championship, Trotwood is now a dark horse.
We’ve also had a number of reporters from around the state ask us about the situation throughout the day. It can be an uncomfortable topic, because the Rams are being investigated on several different charges beyond those involving Shaw.
But, the team’s performance so far and the issues surrounding it have made Trotwood a juicy storyline at this season’s event, which will be settled tomorrow.
