Purnell continuing UD East at Clemson

Those around the Clemson basketball program will say one thing for Oliver Purnell: He’s loyal to his people.

That’s why it seems like a no-brainer that Purnell is expected to make Josh Postorino his new assistant coach, promoting him from his current director of basketball operations position. If that happens, Postorino will replace Shaka Smart, who worked for Purnell at Dayton before becoming his assistant at Clemson. Smart left Clemson for Florida.

Likewise, Postorino was the first player Purnell signed as Dayton’s coach in 1995. Once Postorino graduated, Purnell hired him as the Flyers’ director of operations before moving Postorino into an assistant’s job for two years.
When Purnell came to Clemson in 2003, Postorino followed Dayton assistant Ron Jirsa to Marshall, where he worked as an assistant for four years until Jirsa was fired.

Postorino might have to wait, though, for Purnell to return from vacation in Jamaica, where he might be celebrating hitting the $1 million salary mark.

Here’s more on Clemson’s loss of Smart.
